I just got a 1973 VW Campmobile with an automatic transmission. When in park if I step on the brake the idle drops to almost a stall and struggles to recover and then back down to almost stalling again. But when I lift off of the brake the idle returns to normal. Would this have anything to do with it being an automatic and its vacuum hoses? Vacuum advance on the distributer? Maybe electrical? If anyone has experienced this before I could use the help.
Thanks! Donegood

I dont have a tach I just go off of sound but it happens at what ever idle I set it on. Only when I step on the brakes does the idle go down and want to stall.

Your brake booster is shot! Time to have it rebuilt.

What is an air connector? A better description or a picture would help.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Even at full magnification I can't make it out, is that in the line beside the transmission by any chance?

If you can provide a better picture, we can tell you if someone has it or knows where to get the part.

Is that the fitting on the accordian boot on the front of the brake booster? Not too hard to find used or even manufacture from tubing and JB weld if necessary if it is the atmosphere connection.

To post the photo copy the forum address that shows above it when you open the picture. (it begins and ends with img)

If it was just the plastic vent hose connection that wouldn't cause his problems, would it? But if that valve affair is busted up it is a problem.

No, by itself it wouldn't, but if it was broken for years and allowed the booster to ingest all sorts of water and crap it could be blamed for it in a roundabout way.

ok that cant be it. I followed the hose to a side panel and it just ends everything else on the brake booster looks ok but it still wants to stall when I step on the brake.

The next step is disconnect the hose to the booster at the front of the engine (cap off the port on the balance tube) and see if it still quits when you step on the brake. Caution!: no power brakes during this test, braking will require more effort!
