Since I did not have the sack again this year to make it out to the Classic weekend of fun, please oh please let me and the other non-attendees live vicariously through your stories.
Thanks. |

All I can say it was the best show I have been to. It was incredible. I was saying OH My God all day long seeing such beautiful cars. Sorry if I drooled on anyones car. I never seen so many nice cars in one place before. I got to talk to Everett Barnes which was cool and Jason Lauffer (great guy),Randee "Mr Randar" and good ole Glenn Pablo. Got to put names and faces together. Next year I will be there from Thursday-Sunday. Thanks to my buddy Kyle for the great company all weekend....... Kyle "mr rhd"

i got stopped by TSA peeps in the airport for suspicious goods in my backpack when it went thru the X-ray machine. i got my bag searched. they found an ignition switch with the key in it and a dome light. i got pulled from that line and had the items swabbed for "trace elements" i guess they thought i could use a beat bus ignition switch to trigger explosives. i thanked them for their thoroughness and ran to my plane which was about to close it's doors. same thing on the way home, except i got there way early.

900 miles round trip from nor-cal to so-cal....2 lost hubcaps on lennys 61' double cab, and 1 broken side window latch that was fixed with duct tape, the weld busted on my safari tab....unfortunatly i had to shut my safaris becouse of this. and it had to be in the hottest part of our trip . it had to be over 100 degrees from bakersfeild and fresno but that didnt stop us, we kept on bussin at 70mph. just before the grapevine on the way home my bus just shut off. first thought was no gas but we just filled up the night before, after pouring a few gallons in still nothing. while turning my bus over and calculating how much it will be to tow the 58' home. lenny says.."your getting no spark" i then take another look at the motor and found that the pos+ wire popped off the coil, this happened once more after the grapevine....i cured the problem with my trusty leatherman. this was the 2nd time ive taken my bus to so-cal and im extreamly happy with its performace for being a 1600.

Me and my buddy Mike drove up from San Diego in my slammed '55 Kombi with Jeff Grant cruising behind in his '54 23. We stopped by West Coast Classics on Friday night, the OCTO meet on Saturday, the Classic on Sunday, and Charlie Hamill's house on Sunday afternoon. We caravaned back with my good buddy Doug in his '60 23 on the way back. The whole weekend ruled!

Show was pretty badass. I parked next to a buddy of mine who debuted his 65 21 window deluxe. This was a full custom done full tilt. It was kinda funny to see the cross section of people looking at his bus vs. those that looked at mine. Most of those checking mine had they're asses up in the air and their head scraping the ground trying to see how to go low without bags.

the octo was my show as far as i'm concerned(buses only) the classic was just a plus after riding 500 miles each way. the weather was cooler than expected but was great for an aircooled engine. scored a killer bryce front bumper which gibbs handily installed in the parking lot of the crown plaza(kudos to gibbs!) my buddy nick from modesto has to be the luckiest mofo around when it comes to the raffles,he always takes home something and his comaradery has to be cheered. will i go go again? you bet your sweet ass!......lenny 61 crew norcal and now fully broken in!

special kudos to Norcal Nick and Lenny! they were able to give my daughter Victorya a lift to the Classic from the Crown Plaza hotel. Instant Karma happened to Nick as he entered the lanes to the Classic, someone pulls up and offered him a free show ticket. at the Classic, we found our fuse box part w/ relays for $20, and a bug screen for the Westy. got some good information from other Westy owners who were showing. on the way out of the show, hooked up another ride with Marko who was just cruising by after his mountain bike ride broke down. he gave us a lift back to the Hilton, and then took us to the beach and out to dinner. he happens to own two '71 Westies. invited us to come back next year and stay at his house for the Classic. only in our dreams could this trip been any nicer. see you next year! elizabeth jade

the way i look at it....what goes around...comes around.....if im not in a rush to get somewhere and i see anyone in a aircooled vw stranded on the side of the road im always willing to give a hand, a ride, anything...becouse i know how it was when i first started out in a aircooled vw. i almost gave up a few times and just said "fuck this shit" but i hung in there. and i hope other people do to instead of letting there vw rotting in their back yard. monday on the way to my dads i saw a couple on the side of the road i stopped to help...saw they had a new motor, carb, fuel pump, alt, everthing! was new....so i ask...how olds the motor....1yr....when was the last oil change and valve adjustment? .....2 months.....have you driven 3k since then?.....no....when was the last tune up?.....we havent......how old are the points, wires, plugs, cap, rotor???? we dont know they were on the car when we dragged it out of a feild over a year ago.........THERES YOUR PROBLEM!!!! with a quick look at the cap, rotor, and plugs, i was positive this was there prob. i explained to them how easy it is and that they can do it themselves so they dont have to take it to a shop. if i was driving my bus i would have gave them a tune up on the side of the road and just charged them for the parts i was out....but i was driving the jeep at that time..........so if your stuck on the side of the road and you see a light blue bus pull up behind you and a 6'1 bald mexican jumps out of it....dont be alarmed im just there to help......LOL.... |

We shot about 12 hours of video from thurs to sunday last year at the Classic. We just finished editing it down to two hours of the best stuff just in time to get it to the guys who had the shop tours to show this year. We should have it out there for everyone in the next few days.

Being a bus guy, I enjoyed OCTO most. The literature/toy show was a waste of $5, unless you're really into that kind of stuff. Only about 50 different vendors, some of whom were also at OCTO and the Classic. Classic was a good opportunity to see some of SoCal's finest restorations of all VW air-cooled models and well worth the time; the big bucks and the competitive mentality produce some outstanding examples (this isn't meant as any kind of insult, btw; I lived in LA/OC for 35 years!).
