I have a plan to make at least front corners and rear lower part of the front quaters. |
Mika,
When are you planning on doing the lower rear portions? It would save me from fabbing my own. _________________ Chris

Hi, finally the first repair panel for the front quater lower rear. At first for right side.
I have no car where to test fit it, so I could send it against the shipping cost someone who could weld it in place very soon and give feedback.
The target place:
The repair panel:
The slightly curved wing fitting area as originally:
The slightly curved form as originally:
Front:

okay gang...mika and i have taken care of things. stay tuned as i install the piece into my '57 beetle. it usually takes only a week or so for parts to get to me from finland. i will install the part quickly and post pictures as i normally do. (if your not familiar with my anal retentiveness, please have a look at my build thread in my signature!) _________________ "Broadsword calling Dannyboy"

|
|
i received mika’s repair panel a week or so ago. i think it took about 10 days to get to me here in ohio.
before i install this piece, i need to repair my heater channel, so i’ll post some first impressions of mika’s repair panel.
here’s a picture of the panel placed onto the car.
it looks terrific! the metal is 1mm thick…as original. the height of the panel is about 180mm. all the contours look like they match perfectly.
i’m really impressed with the area highlighted by the red arrow in the photo below.
it isn’t welded together…it’s formed from the single piece of steel of the panel. i took various measurements and compared it to my original…everything looks spot on.
looking closer, the contours match my original wheelwell quite well. notice the flange the red arrow is pointing to. it prevents me from moving the panel aft a few millimeters, so don’t be alarmed about the edges not being aligned. also note there’s a dent on one of the edges. i can hammer and dolly this out, or trim the piece a little shorter to take care of this.
the curve of the wheelwell looks great, too! (blue arrow).
moving forward, the middle of the panel is a perfect match…
it’s a little difficult to tell in the photo below, but the forward flange of the panel matches my original as well.
that’s all i have for now. from what i can see…i wouldn’t change a thing, mika.
as mentioned previously, i need to repair the heater channel before i can install this piece.
keep an eye on the “build thread” (page 21) in my signature. i will keep this thread focused on mika’s panel…so i won’t post the heater channel repair.
cheers, tim _________________ "Broadsword calling Dannyboy"

That is a great price. Keep us updated. I will be ordering a set. _________________ Chris

sorry gang...and mika. i finished the work last weekend...just haven't gotten around to posting.
i'm on lunch break, so real quick...
the first picture shows the trimmed panel placed onto the car. notice i trimmed off the flange on the left. i didn't feel like peeling away the bent over flange. but, i did not look like it wasn't in the right location.
here's a closeup of the aft area. notice the red arrow pointing to a section that doesn't quite match up to my original quarter panel. it sticks out just under 5mm.
the white curved arrow in the photo below illustrates (i hope) that the section the fender attaches to is "torqued over" clockwise a little bit too much. i hope this makes sense...
i would be lying if i said it took me longer than 60 seconds to fix. i just used my hammer and dolly to flatten it out a little.
here's the front section...looks great! the flange matched up with my original perfectly.
the finished repair after welding, grinding and a bit of primer.
