Hello, so I want to powder coat my smoothies. I sand blasted them myself. sedan is a 59 and want to match the original colors. I believe the body is capri blue so wheels would be L336 dark blue and L227 silver white. I have read here that you can't powder coat two colors so my question is what color should I do? I'm leaning to do silver white just because it cover more part of the rim.
Also, what would you guys recommend as far as getting the correct color? Can I just give the color code to the body shop or should I get the colors from a different source? Thanks for your time.... pic of the car, let me know if it's not capri....

One easy solution would be to powdercoat the whole wheel one color and then paint the other color over it |

well, it's been a few weeks. Just want to post the progress on the wheels with pics:
After a car was and polishing the chrome:
Wheels ready to sand blast
sand blast media
sand blasted the paint off, not sure if it was original but is was old for sure
Powder coated tiger 9016
tires back on, now comes the hard part
Since powder coat is so thick, the grove valley between to two metals is gone. Taping was more than difficult and required a lot of patience and finesse.
It was cold and late so I decided to paint inside lol
took the glove box door to get colored matched and came out an exact match!
don't know why it looked green in person and in the picture
took my time with the tape job and it still didn't come out perfect
I was prepared for that and with a tinny art brush i finished off the outline
Wheels back on. The chrome polish wasn't enough for 2 caps so I got them re-chromed. They went a little heavy on it and the VW almost vanished.
Before
After. this side has the new chromed caps
This side the caps were just polished
EDIT: newer photos

The wheels look great! Question about the sandblasting... did you blast with the tires still on the wheel? What did you use to protect them from the blast media? Just about to do this myself, but don't really want to dismount and then remount these tires if I can avoid it... it's just a temporary job anyway |

Thanks odecom. Yeah I sandblasted with the wheels on. The glass media wasn't that harsh. it didn't take out some rust manly paint and the gun was pretty accurate. The inside of two tires had water and was pretty rusted. The powder coaters did a better job at sandblasting that stuff.... |

I did the same thing in June of 2007, it was the best thing I did. They always look good and it’s a breeze to clean them.
I painted the inner ring silver beige. Back then, the powder coating, cost me $50 a wheel I had all 5 done so it was $250 plus a little tax.
They did all the sandblasting and prep-work, all I did was take off the tires and deliver the rims.
To be honest I was looking to spend around $75 per tire.

Yes I painted them with a rattle spay can. I made a jig out of cardboard, the inside one was like
a pie tin and the outside one was like a life preserver. The hardiest part was making the jig. _________________ Check out this these youtube videos videos

Here's mine. I had them blasted for $75 with the tires on then I masked and painted them.
I had the same issue you had EnerOnE with the masking around the seam. I too used a thin model brush to touch up the seam.

Ah, I thought about that but decided on the tape instead. Yours came out clean.

Here are mine. Sand blasted with tires off. Replaced broken hubcap clips. Using automotive paint, primered all over. Then painted satin black inside and behind, and cream white and Gulf Blue L390 (in that order) on front. Got new hubcaps. To finish it off I added year correct black hubcap logo stickers (bought here in the classifieds).

One trick you may use when masking off those inner and outer rings of the wheels: using shelf paper like you can buy in Walmart. The self-stick kind.
You cand drop it vertically into your groove of your rim, and run a stick or a butter knife around the base to get good sticking contact, then fold it back to cover your masked area.
The self stick shelf paper can be pulled off and reset easily too. It's not too sticky.
Just an idea to consider |

OP - your wheels look really good but too good for the state of the bodywork on your car.
They stick out like the dog's bollocks
I preferred the aged bodywork / aged wheels look.
I had my tyres removed and wheels sandblasted a couple of years ago.
The blaster always does me a good deal - $20 / wheel including priming them
I painted them the original silver with a two pot clear over them.
I had the tyres refitted and balanced.
I'm not a fan of powdercoating - unless you really know the quality you'll be getting. Two pot paint is often harder these days and certainly cheaper

Alby it's funny I was thinking the same thing looking at the old pics. Looking back I kind of wish I should have left the wheel patina but it's done and I do love the new wheels.
The first thing I did when I bought the car was put running boards and powder coat the wheels. Since then I have done more work, its a work in progress and wish I had the time and money to do everything I have plans for all at once.
Well, I put some updated pics of the paint, just gave it some well deserved shine and the wheels flow better now. I'm still debating if I should just clear coat or repaint. _________________ Check out my new smoothies: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5763671&highlight=#5763671 |

At least sandblasting our wheels we know the true condition of them. One or two of mine were rusty inside but no holes so I bogged the eaten out parts before putting the rim strips back on.
Your car/wheels do look better shined up
My '67 (USA year '66 - sloping lights etc) is a very slow work in process too.

Much easier, quicker, and cleaner than hand painting. _________________ If all else fails, stop using all else

I know this is an older thread, but for future reference, any powder coater that's worth using should be able to do a two tone powder coated wheel.
One of my best friends owns a powder coating shop and he does two different colors on wheels all the time. I can post pictures if anyone is interested.
