1973 squareback
I searched around and couldn't find much but a recommendation to look at the wheel bearing, I am fairly certain that it is not the problem though. Just got the car a couple of days ago and already this. When in 4th gear it is making a whining noise and it was just in a specific RPM range so I figured, speed coupled with the rotations were causing something trivial to rattle since it it was just within that range. Around 1/4 to 1/2 throttle I would say. It has since started to progress and I actually noticed it a tiny bit in 3rd and just a tad in 2nd for a few seconds. The guy I got the car from said the PO had it slammed all the way down and I know what that does to suspension parts on pretty much ANY car, but this is actually my first aircooled vw. Some noises are specific to certain cars, I havent heard a wheel bearing make a noise like this, or a trans, but I have also never had one sitting behind me at 60mph. I tried to take the cover off the engine so I could hear it better but that lasted about 2 blocks, Phoenix is alot hotter than in IN!!! I am in Phoenix, If anyone with a good amount of knowledge has any insight I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks |

are you sure its not engine harmonics? All of the vw I have owned make this whiny whistle noise at certain rpm/load in top gear.
for a gearbox to while at a certain rpm is very unusual and normally whine constantly or constant on deceleration or both.
sound like this? at 0:09 again at 1:22 and again at 2:37

I believe its engine harmonics? I have heard this in every flat 4 engine I have seen around top gear 1/3rd to mid revs, medium- heavy load. |

My 67 has had a howl/whine in 4th gear ever sense I brought it home 5 years ago. It was low on oil the boots were torn from the PO. I have changed engines a couple times(not that I thought it wad the engine). But it is only in 4th. I have a replacement already set aside so when the new engine is ready then the trans will be upgraded as well. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. | I checked the fluid and it was almost a whole quart low!!! It is all of 4th gear and only when you touch the accelerator. Even just a little bit. I can kinda feel it in the shifter if I put my hand on it, when in fourth the shifter seems really sloppy and loose. You can adjust it with just the shifter? I am kinda leaning towards a shifter fork noise, sounds like 2 spline gears spinning with no lubrication. The front of the engine(rear of the car) is sagging about an inch and needs the mounts shimmed to bring it up, could that maybe be causing it? Does anyone on here live in Northern Phoenix or around the area? I drove like a hundred miles today and it does fine, it's not getting any worse than it was, but the noise scares the hell out of me!!!! Side note, is there any way you can change the gearing of the speedo to be accurate if you have changed the tire size, I'm pissing alot of other drivers off!!! |

Ah, you must have been the late model Square I saw when I was in Phx last week. The friend I was visiting was just commenting that you never see Squarebacks in Phoenix and I said "Really? what's that?". I thought her jaw was gonna drop. Looked like a nice one.
On your saggy engine- make sure the carrier bar isn't cracked behind the fan housing. I've seen that more than once. _________________ Give A Pal a Hand!

| Try squeezing a small tube of MoS2 (molybdenum disulphide, or "moly") grease into the tranny and see if that quiets it down a bit. |

If you had it Weds. or Thurs. last, I saw it. If not, your car has a brother running around Phx. I was all over the place while there- Chandler, Scottsdale, downtown, Guadalupe, etc. Can't remember exactly where I saw it. Now get busy and post up some pics! _________________ Give A Pal a Hand!

| Oh hell yeah it went away! I grenaded the transmission!!!!! Second gear like blew up! Easy come easy go, had the car for 7 DAYS!! Little stuff is bound to break, I guess I just didn't expect it to be that drastic that fast. I'll have it back on friday though. |

Don't worry, the first and only tranny I blew was also a VW square tranny. I blew first gear, but upon closer inspection I actually destroyed the main pinion bearing which almost cut off the outside of 1st gear from its center from bearing debris getting jammed at the side of the gear.
yep that was one POS gearbox after all those broken engine bay induced violent shudder burnouts |
