A set of ear plugs. The IDAs put out a LOT of noise. You may be able to tolerate it around town for short trips, but after a few hours........ _________________

i drove my 59 single from Orange county calif to seattle in july last year.. Its slamed and has a pro street flyer and at that time a bone stock 1500 we took the 101 the entire trip and had only one problem and it was a spun drum due to some faulty jerry rigged spacer.. the motor ran flawless.. and did i mention i flew down on a tuesday with a buddie and bought it sight unseen and we headed north that same day... No history on the truck at all was one of the best trips of my life..
I will be drivin said truck to kelly park in April of this year aswell.. I would drive that thing anywhere... _________________ RustWagens

I like what Muir said in his idiot book, you take a trip in an OK VW and it will probably run better after you take the trip (as long as you plan the time in for repairs ) _________________ '70's Baja, new project, parting out the '65

Take your Triple A card. Somebody already said to take your cell phone.
I never drive my 46 year old car without both of them

Shoot, just add towing to your insurance and get the heck out of
dodge! I've done two 2,000 mile and one 4,000 mile trip in
pre 68 VW's with no problems. Sounds like you know your car
and that's the main thing. I would take the basics like fan belt,
fuel pump, and tune -up parts, small bag of tools, etc.
And don't forget your sense of adventure! I'm jealous. _________________ 67 beetle, body off resto-rod 40% done I hope.

AAA got it now as far as the IDA's go i do love the sound quite abit the only concern i have is the gas milage even with the tranny which i thought would help but ive been told different and im not dumb when it comes to runnin them by any means but still thought i could make it alittle better , maybe go with a taller tire or somthing . but never the less i want to do this trip with them as its goin to be my full on daily as it was with its little 40 horse , just somthin about IDA's on a daily is bad ass to me ... and i guess if anyone would be interested in how the story goes like ive seen on here i will keep it goin with progress on car and the trip its self as it should be fun and a adventure for sure and also plenty of pics too cause who dont like pics of vw's rollin down the freeway and at wierd places along the way ...... and again thanx to all of you so far for the help and hints and stories i do feel better with every post i read so keep'em comin _________________ I LOVE THIS SH*T !!!!!

I'm getting ready for my trip to OCTO/Classic in June. There are number of threads that have some good parts recommendations. If you take it with you, you won't need it. Below is a good thread.

I drove my '64 bug to Montana and back. On the way up, there was a 16' canoe on top. No problems but the stock forty horse put me in with the semis for most of the trip. I saw the most vivid rainbow of my life on the way. Round trip over 2.000 miles.
In 1983 my '67 van made the trip to Crested Butte and back at 75 mph all the way both ways. It had cut out wheel wells and bigger tires. Round trip around 2.000 miles.
Go and have a good time. What could happen? Oh, never mind. Just go. You're young.

Well then I guess I will just head out your way.... LOL!
You are going to have a great time! Enjoy the trip and make sure to post up some pics.
I've been thinking about driving mine up to Woodward this year Cinci from Detroit, about 6 hours or so I think. Not too long at all but still kind of trips me out.

As long as the car is in good maintained condition and driven within the designed limits (not 70-80mph), there is no reason not to drive an air cooled long distances. They were made to drive, any where any weather. _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org
