I know...here we go again. But I did look and didn't find much valuable information on this question.

I recently stripped the undercoating off of the belly pans and inner wheel wells from my 68 Westy project. WHen the undercoating came off, there are sections of nice OG paint, but there is also a decent amount of surface rust in other areas. I want to paint them with POR since rust prevention is my primary concern. I've noticed some people say just use 60 grit to scuff in a cross hatch pattern and then go ahead and paint. I'll use the cleaner and metal prep also. Any other ideas?

Primer is your friend. Use it too.

I chose to use the etch primer compatible with POR 15.

It turned out pretty good. Hard to spray, need lotsa air. Even harder to clean up after. Throw your gun away when you're done.

POR 15 over etch is much harder than without the etch. Sticks better, seals better. Should last longer.

Por-15 is a great barrier between the metal and the atmosphere. It's tough as nails and will protect what is left of the metal....
However, it is very tempermental when it comes to bonding with other paints/primers/sealers.
It sticks well with a scuff with 80 grit to give it something to bite.
It dries to a gloss finish which will need to be sanded if topcoated.....it does not like to be sanded. It will ball up if overheated while sanding.
For the best results, you will need to use topcoats compatible with their system.
If used in an area that can be undercoated, or in a trunk, it's a wonderful product.
Just speaking from experience. Wink

I've used POR before, so I knew what to expect. The stuff is tough as nails and I've had nothing but good experiences with it, except when I get it on my skin. Very Happy I just hadn't used it directly over a painted surface. Always before it was on some surface rust or other rougher areas.

I ended up scuffing the wheel wells and belly pans with 80 grit and then hitting that with a light coat of etching primer before putting on the POR. Seems to have gone on pretty well, but only time will tell how it adheres.

Maybe the etching primer will help. If not, I'll figure something else out when it does peel.
