Very Happy That helped lol. Ok I suppose I can give it a shot, And I figure it will give me something to do while I wait to get the heads machined and ext. But since the 914 is different as you said, what all will need to be changed for application in the bus? Or did you mean switching parts from my original to the 914? Also since I will be doing a complete rebuild now. Would the engine gasket sets be different if I just got a normal Type 4 1700 (1800 if I get the heads and everything machined.... probably will) or do I need to find a 914 SPECIFIC gasket set?

the single most important thing to change out is the cam,and of course lifters, now if you were real lucky you "could " use the original but you will get better overall performance and less head temps with an aftermarket one, lets not get ahead of ourselves tho ,lets get it apart and see whats doin inside ,report back with pics.I am certain the difference in gasket sets is the difference in counterbore size between 1700 and 1800/2lt otherwise they are the same. What sort of budget do you have??

Ok, I called the machine shop today and he said he has not done a type 4 head before but tons of type 1's. He said he will just need to find the dimensions to go from 1.7 to 1.8, I also told him I do have a junk head if he wanted to try it first. But hopefully this weekend I can find the time to get the motor torn down. I debating if I should order the engine stand adapter, but I also only have a "T" type stand which are about the worst according to Artwell. And my budget isn't that great, I didn't want to spend over 500 (ish), and I was hoping to have it running by early spring.

Sorry I haven't gotten the motor torn apart yet, I ended up getting sick. Anyways I called the machine shop today and since theyve never done type 4 heads he needs the dimensions of what to cut to make my 1.7 to 1.8. So do any of you guys know the dimensions of the cyl. or the dimensions I need to tell him? Also since this is a 914, I was just about to order my new set from AA Performance and I noticed there is a second category for 914's. Do I order the normal VW 1.8 or the 914 or is there even a difference?

In the AA listings the 1.8l sets are the same but they look dished. How much dished I wonder so I would email em. The 914 pistons were slightly dished for a 7.3 to one CR for 72hp. What is the engine code on the case?
Type 4 gaskets sets fit the 914. The only difference is between the 1.7/1.8 and the 2.0L sets with different cylinder gaskets.

W and EA code 914 1.7L engines came with domed pistons for a 8.2 to 1 CR and 80hp. EB were low CR flat topped bus pistons for a 7.3 to 1 CR and 73hp.
