when i click the starter over, the fan goes real slow over and over like the belts on too tight or it does not have enough battery. i tested the battery and its 12v so..could my aftermarket engine tin not be installed right and be rubbing metal slowing it down? also i hear a short whissping sound like air is leaking. my body is off the chassis so every things easy to look at

belt. how much can you squeeze the belt together? will the fan move freely with the belt off?

did you move the distributor/timing? loosen the dist clamp a little and while crank move the distributor (if looking down at it) a little bit at a time clockwise and see if the engine spins faster.

do you have 12 volt on the positive side of the coil?

Unfortunately, that test doesn't tell much. All that "rest" voltage tells you is that it's not 10 volt or 8 volt, which is obviously bad.

It's voltage across the battery WHILE under load while trying to crank 10 seconds that's relevant, measure and post that. It should be 9.6 volts or better doing that. If the engine doesn't spin fast enough, it won't start.

Try jump starting.

More testing is required for great answers.

The first step is to charge the battery then continue with diagnostics. The 12v means little, CCA (cold cranking amps) is the important reading.

then the distributer wires on the negative side.

nothing on my alternator
spark plugs are in

I'm hearing a whissping sound like I'm loosing compression somewhere
when i hit the starter i hear a click and thats it, and the fan turns slowly

The fan will turn only if the engine is turning. A click can sometimes mean a bad connection at the battery, a starter solenoid not working or a discharged battery that has enough power to activate the solenoid (the click) but does not have enough power to spin the engine. It could be a bad starter also. Clean all of the connections to the battery and starter. The engine is not going to run until you get it to turn over at an adequate speed with the starter.

If starter is turning the engine, then the engine is turning over. It is just not firing!

Yes you are loosing compression due to the engine is NOT up to operating temp when all the parts in there swell up and seal better, and even then there is no such thing as perfectly absolutely sealing piston rings.

is the starter turning the engine? the fan will not turn if the starter is not turning the engine. sounds like you are saying the starter solenoid is clicking but the starter is not turning but the fan is moving. you have me confused with your statement.

if the valves are not adjusted correctly then you could be loosing compression or getting blow back through the carb.

maybe bow back from the carb, should the hole on the side be closed off? i believe on the intake mani

the fan has slow revolutions but the battery is reading 8.2 while I'm trying to start it. that may be the problem

does the alt have anything to do with it? its not wired up but that may not have anything to do with what I'm looking for and thats just getting a smooth fan turn

i didn't wanna say it but i was given an aftermarket fan housing that could not be seated correctly right? is that a common problem?

Well that is not helping!! Time to charge it up. If you already have then time to have battery tested.

the alternator does not have to be wired to start the engine but the battery will drain slowly with the engine running.

take the fan belt off and see if the alternator pulley/fan turns freely or is dragging.

then try cranking the engine to see if it cranks faster. if it starts then don't let it run for more than a minute.

ALL unused vacuum ports on the carb and intake should be plugged.

i thought about this after i posted earlier. if the timing is off or the spark plug wires on the distributor are in the wrong order then you will get backfire out of the carb.

Bow back from the carb?? What hole on the carb??? Images please. Believe on intake mani what?
Slow down and double check what you are typing please.

Alt is not going to put out voltage till you have the engine running well above 500 RPM.

As posted before, remove fan belt and check if alt/fan can be easily turned by hand, and if it rubs.

If you mean the shroud is not seated correctly in the head tin it sounds more like you do not have parts together properly.

the fan turns freely while the belt is loose so i believe thats not the problem.
i tested it and its reading average 8.2 while I'm trying the starter, the fan slowly goes around so it must be the battery right?

are the spark plug wires supposed to go facing each cylinder because i read to switch the 1 and 2 on the distributer so maybe thats my problem too
