this is the issue, I have an 88 wolfsburg...really straight, no rust, complete, interior is really nice has 127k ...but its been sitting for 10yrs, has a transmission issue(not shifting from 1st, but will manually shift I think) it was parked due to that then it wasn't running right, a quick check and I found two bent pushrods.

I have a rebuilt motor sitting here for it...but heres the other issue.

My Doka is stripped inside, could use new front doors and I could canibalize the dash and front interior and my doka would be pretty happy.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I'm having a hard time finding a parts donor close to me...I made the mistake of choking on a deal on one locally but thats in the past...vanagons here are kinda rare.

I see plenty of money making parts just in your one picture.

After 12 years of parting vans, I will admit that I have always turned 4 times my money on the parts and kept what I needed....then the scrap pays my shop mortgage....every month.

I just watched choice Syncro parts get listed in the classifieds two days ago and most are gone already.

The community needs more people to part out better quality vans than found already at the crusher.

Are you kidding me? You're within 200 miles of Portland/Seattle/I-5 corridor where vanagons are king. For a $40 u-haul trailer rental you can pick up a vanagon for parts almost any day of the week. Why kill a decent one when we're surrounded by wrecks? Confused Here's a couple to scavenge from: http://portland.craigslist.org/search/?areaID=9&am...catAbb=sss

It's a material object that is currently wasting space. It's has what you need
to put your truck together so use it. Dont get hung up on the condition of the van being to good for a donor. I personally prefer good shape donors than beat up junks. It will be worth it in the end when your done with your project.

Part it. After sitting 10 years it will take a lot more than the car is worth to get it on the road safely. Tin tops just don't hold the value that sycros and westys do. There are too many modern mini vans that do a good job of hauling kids more reliably and safely than vanagons do for the average family. If there was a modern van that had a good camping layout at a reasonable price point, our westys would be a lot cheaper, too. For the mechanically inclined, a tin-top offers a fuel efficient alternative to a work truck, but that is where the value ends. This, of course, is IMHO.

You would commit a sin.

Fix it, drive it, sell it.

You can always get the parts you mention you need.

Get a good used transmission and stick you engine in.

Fix the brakes and put tires on.

Done.

Reason, your other van is a PROJECT that is going to take a long time.

This van can fill a void.

BTDT.

Take the parts you need for your other rig. Finish the project that means more to you. If, as others say, there is no problem finding the parts in question, you can then decide to fix this one at that point. Having all the parts you now need in front of you, yet deciding to go looking for a different source is fine for those who have nothing better to do ... but if you don't want to wait another ten years, just do it! Don't worry about the German Purists: we know what that got them ...

Exactly, I see at the min $2k in parts alone getting this to a decent driver...im not talking patch-it-flip I don't do that.

And this will be worth what? at max $3500...I would probably keep it if I did what needed to be done.

It would be great to have my doka setup with late model stuff, wiring, interior.

Could be my other hole talking, me thinks.

If vanagons are so rare where you are, who's going to buy the parts? Then there's the hassel of shipping. Most parts can't be shipped or are too large. I think you'd be sitting on it for years to make a few bucks.

Man, I don't envy your position. Reading the thread I see you with a little devil on one shoulder and a tiny angel on the other. Both whispering in your ear. I was in the same position until yesterday. It appeared we'd have to part out our late '83 camper. Fortunately a mechanic bought it from me to rehab and sell. I feel better knowing it's been saved from the crusher.
I like RMW's idea of putting it up on craigslist.
Good Luck

Reality is you are going to have to get rid of it either way.
Sell it as an almost whole van or pay to have it carted away after you
take what you want out of it. Pay to tow it, pay to scrape it....
so on..... tough choice but I go with sell it as it is and then bank some extra bucks and keep the van going. Then spend some of that windfall on parts.

good luck either way
