Needed to remove my transmission.
Did many searches
One bolt hole was stripped. Couldn't get a timesert so used helicoil, yuk, seemed to work though.
Questions:
1) can I replace the helicoil with a timesert later on?
2) what washers are used for bolts, I noticed a lock plate in a pic? where can they be found?
3) what is the torque spec? ( don't have a Bentley handy right now )

1) i have not tried to replace a helicoil with a timesert. i guess it could be done. a helicoil is a coil and could probably be "uncoiled", a timesert is a solid insert and they say they can be drilled out if necessary.

3) torque spec is 100-120Nm (or 72-86 ft. lbs) and are tightened in this sequence:

The earlier buses came with 17mm heads on the RGB bolts
the later have 19mm.
I believe the change was when they dropped the lock plates in favor of the washers.
Always use a tap to clean out the threads in the RGB, so you can thread them in by hand. Avoid crossthreading. |

The spring plate bolts that I have removed from the big stub axle RGBs have been longer than the earlier ones. Someone said that, because the lock washers were thicker than the lock plates, they used longer bolts. Is that true? _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

| I'm tending to agree with you. I wonder if the parts list shows a difference. I like the longer ones for Bays and then I chase a bottoming tap on down and use the thick ass lock washers when I can find them. |

the replacement washers are not lock washers, they are spring washers. the spring washers are thinner than a lock washer. the spring washers are about the same thickness as an original lock plate.
the part number, in the parts book, is N 10 199 1 Bolt, hex. head M 12 X 1.5 X 25 - Spring plate mounting from chassis No. 20 117 902
i've taken out plenty of "early" bolts and "late" bolts (whatever), they are 25mm in length.

| The Bay springplate-to-bearing housing bolt that is similar. I couldn't look it up on the parts website as it only goes to '67. It uses a spring washer but with a thick lock washer it will go all the way into a RGB. Or nevermind as it doesn't actually pertain. |

| Threads like this remind me of how much the use of anti-seize has changed my life. I should devise a little belt holster to carry it around the shop with me, I use it that much. |

the use of anti seize changes torque specs be careful you can easily over tighten a bolt when used I prefer to chase the threads wit a tap and visually inspect or replace the bolts. Once torqued water shouldn't be reaching the threads to cause a problem _________________ April 3rd 62 standard mgr/pw

anybody have a source for the proper grade bolts?
I got black ones from the store but they were 8.8 rated. The Kamax bolts are 10. Next grade is a 10.9 I think. I ordered bolts from Wolfsburg West thinking they would be the right grade but they gave me silver 8.8 bolts.
My Kamax bolts were a little to worked over to reuse. |
