|
|
I always pick up gas caps at shows as I went through a period of leaving them at gas stations. Now that I carry a spare I never leave one behind.
I have three gas caps,
one has no logo, one has a VW only logo, and the last one has a VW and a set of circles as in late stuff.
Which one is correct?

The set of circles is the audi emblem. Can't really tell you which one is right for a '73. I have seen somewhere about someone that had the same issue alot and ended up putting a magnet on the cap, won't fall off after you set it on the car....
I've personally got a locking cap, kinda hard to leave it behind when your keys are in the cap _________________ My Oval Project

I'd say they're all correct. But I'd say x2 on the locking cap. That's what I have and you can't forget it at the gas station. Plus with gas getting more and more expensive, I wouldn't like a non locking cap, even though I don't park the Thing in public places and unattended very often... _________________ 1976 181/Thing (daily driver), 1967 fastback, 1973 squareback, 1964 microbus, 1967 Double Cab, 1969 westfalia (currently under resto), 1972 westfalia, 1978 westfalia, 1972 LM1C dune buggy, 1974 jean's bug, 1974 1303 (super beetle, currently under reassembly after new paint) + 2 semi wrecks 181 (1971 and 1972)... |

That's a Bus cap.
They fit and look WAY cool.
But aren't correct. _________________ --- The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair.

| The "authentic" one I bought at The Thing Shop has the VW emblim and the Audi circles. Also some scratches picked up leaving a gas station, as it bounced along the ground. |

I like the idea of using rare earth magnets to keep track of wayward gas caps but rather than attaching it to the cap itself I would put it on the underside of the front hood. There should still be enough magnetism there to secure it.
Pretty much how I keep my front euro plate on. _________________ 74 VW Thing - Walküre

| Let me add a question: what is the correct finish for the gas cap? I have one that is body color, one that is yellow cad plated, and the locking one which is (I believe) polished stainless. |

What year is that Bus cap from? I have always wanted one but never knew what years work on a 181. _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

| On my first Thing, I rigged up a piece of nylon cord inside the filler neck that retained the cap. It drove the gas attendants nuts as it would always pull the cap right out of their hands as they tried to pull the cap from the car. Would like to rig something similar up again on my present Thing, but what I usually do at present is put the cap in my back pocket when I am fueling. I may forget to put the cap back on, but once I sit on it I am quickly reminded. |

The Audi logo didn't start to appear on VW parts until about 75-76, so that wouldn't be "correct" for a 73.
Here's the genuine VW locking Thing gas cap:
If you want to put a cap on with a big VW logo, look for a 62-67 Beetle cap. Bus caps don't fit. _________________

I'm not sure what year it is from. I can take a couple of pictures tonight though. |

A '62-'67 Bug cap will fit, and has a large logo:

You sure about that?
I'm actually not sure of the ALL the bus years that fit, and I don't feel like researching it now.
But I can tell you, for a fact, that the big logo caps from my '70 Weekender AND my '71 single cab both interchange perfectly to my 181.
Of course all three of those vehicles currently sport key matched interchangable locking caps.

Bay window caps will work. Split Bus caps won't. |
