|
|
I'm new at this so patience is appreciated.
Background: Surprising my son with the Bay when he gets home from his mission to Chile in June, so I'm trying to get her dependable and running smooth. She has always run kind of rough, even though she has a rebuilt engine (mech I took it to verified that). She has all new tune up stuff and is timed to 30 degrees at running RPM. But she still runs either very high or very low (stalls) so I'm thinking carb because...
The PO said he took off "the thing on the carb that makes it idle when it's cold cause it gives you bad mileage." Not being a carb guy...yet...I'm asking if you guys see anything missing.
I'd almost prefer to just buy a rebuilt carb and start fresh so my son doesn't have to inherit this one, but will the new one come with the thing the PO took off?
If I do replace, any suggestions?

Your mechanic should be hung by his toe nails for being an $*(#%_. A properly functioning choke will not hurt gas mileage. The choke should only be fully closed before the engine is cold started and then should open about 3/16 of an inch immediately on start up. Over the next three to five minutes it should open the rest of the way.
It looks like everything is there though, he may just have backed the tension on the choke coil off to the point it will not work. You need to make sure the choke heater is actually working and then adjust the choke according to the manual.
Which distributor do you have? The carb and distributor need to be matched. |

That's a rather ummm..... agressive looking spring on there, change that soon if it hasn't already worn out the throttle shaft.
Is that a fuel filter I see the edge of in there? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

looks like a solex h30/31 but not positive from your pics. looks like the choke is there just make sure its hooked up to the coil so it works when turned on. almost sounds like a distributor issue to me. Or a vacuum leak. _________________ 66 bus with factory slider!- $50

Spring: Funny you should say that. While timing today, my wife started it for me and when it was waaaaaay too high and I asked her to back it off, she said her foot was off the gas pedal. it seems to stick. I shot some WD40 on it but to no avail.
If the shaft is worn out, do I need a new carb?
Yes, I will get that filter out of there soon
How do I know if the distributor and carb match? |

Quite often this problem is a worn linkage under the floor at the gas pedal. _________________ '69 SC under resto

if the linkage or cable is sticky you will see the throttle arm on the carb being held open when it is binding.
i would check for intake (vacuum) leaks as well.
make sure the accelerator pump rod is not hanging up on the alternator too.
it's really more about being a problem solver than "a carb guy" _________________ '71 - 1600DP, C/W - 32NDIX - o19

bottom pic gold looking cylindrical thing right at the bottom----thats your idle cut off solenoid ,it needs power from the choke wire , with the ign on touch the wire on the connector and see if you feel a click if you do its ok .Vac leaks are fairly common on that type of manifold ,check carefully .there are 2 screws on the l h side 1 large 1 small directly below it ,the small one is idle mixture try it around 2 turns out ,the large one is idle speed or volume _________________ I like hammers. Your distributor should have a Bosch and/or VW part number on it, and your carb should have a Solex part number on is, something like 30PICT-1.
Make sure there is some slack in the throttle cable at idle. |

Hi, It looks like your intake boot has a pretty good tear in it. You can patch it with some shoe goop and some tape until you can replace it.

Good Luck
P.S. If the throttle shaft was worn the idle would stay high and not come down. |

It was the PO who took the choke off, not the mechanic.
Also, by matching distributor and carb, do you mean distributor made by Bosch and carb made by Solex, or are there certain types of Bosch distributors and Solex carbs that need to match up? |

Guys - Have you'all noticed how far in his throttle return screw is turned in?
That's a holy smokes, not good harbinger of things to come. That screw is supposed to be adjusted to the point that it barely touches the fast idle cam below the steps and then is turned in a 1/4 rotation clockwise.
I'll bet dollars to donuts that carburetor needs to come off, be stripped down and soak for about a week in carburetor cleaner. It will be a good time to check the throttle shaft for looseness.
Sorry to be the messenger with bad news.

No adapter plate so I wouldn't bet on it being an h30/31. The screw on the fast idle cam is also concerning.
I dpull the rubber boot to see if what the previous owner removed was the butterfly valve for the choke. _________________ 1968 westy weekender

Not bad news at all. As stated previously I'd kind of prefer to find a rebuilt carb and start over. I'm not the kind of guy to just throw money at something but if butterfly valve might be missing, throttle shaft could be worn (and it does stick when I pull it manually) and if it's gunked up from sitting the five years it sat, it might be wise to get another one. Where does one buy a rebuilt carb that can be trusted? |
