1. remove the fuel line from the fuel pump and see if you are getting fuel from the tank to the fuel pump.
2. replace the other fuel line and then remove the fuel line from the carb and place the end in a gas safe container (glass jar) and crank the engine and see if fuel pumps out the end of the hose.
3. filling the bowl on the carb. i would fill enough to make the float in the carb rise. you can take the screws out that hold the top of the carb on or use a small funnel and feed using the line that goes to the carb from the fuel pump. i use a squirt bottle that you would use for ketchup and mustard. another way, if you look down inside the carb then you will see a large tube sticking up. use the squirt bottle to put gas in the bowl through that tube. you are not going to know how much but you really need just enough to get the throttle arm on the carb to pump gas. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

gas get pushed out of the carb in a fine mist. plug ANY unused ports including the one on the manifold. was the gas coming out at the intake boots that connect the center intake manifold to the manifolds coming off the heads? _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

You dumped like 12 ounces of gas down the carb huh? That not how it works, now there is gas fooding the cyclenders and pumping past the exhust valves and out the exhust!!! time for a huge fire!!!
I would unbolt the exhust and turn the motor over by had (after i disconted the battery) and pull all the plugs clean up all the gas and let it sit for a day, put it all back and start over with out dumping gas down the carb!!! P.S. i think you should keep a fire extinguisher handy!! |

you ask a question on this site and a person helps (to the best of their ability) to answer your question if they want to. the way i do things might not be by the book or the way someone else does things but they work for me. my car (that i rebuilt) is running and has stopped running/broke (off roader) and i have fixed and now it is running again. you are our eyes for your problems. bouncing around from problem to problem will confuse people. we know you can do it because we were in the same boat at one time and learned the ways by asking or researching. your car says VW on it and so does mine but i bet they are two different animals and setup can vary. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

a VW as simple as it is will do that. i have been there and that is why you find so many VW's rotting out in fields.
is there a area VW club that you could join so their Guru could help you? i think you have a few issues (simple and not so simple) that have to be taken care of before the engine will run.
i think i could help but we have to slow down and start at the beginning and go step by step. it will require pictures of the parts we are working on to help me help you. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

Ok well thank you
Lets start over with the distributer, are you saying the #1 should be where the notch is in the distributer cap?(what does that notch represent?) then 4,3,2 going clockwise?
2nd question with the fuel pump, does the carb line go to the top or bottom fuel pump hole? i don't feel my fuel pump is working because when i tried to turn the alt nut it did not squirt gas
3rd question, what did i do when i out all that gas down the carb and it flooded my cylinders? as long as it dries will it be alright? tell me more on what happened and how to fix my mistake
let me kno what you want to see as far as pics, i have an iPhone so uploading pics quick is easy |

Just below where you are connecting the metal tube to the vacuum hose, there is a brass solenoid with an electrical connector. That needs to be hooked up to the "+" side of your ignition coil. If you have it disconnected, you will NEVER be able to start your engine. The thing is an electromagnetic cut off valve. It's #16 in the carburetor diagram. When you turn your key on (+12 volts applied) it pulls the plunger back and opens the passage to let the air/fuel mixture in. When you turn your car off, (no voltage applied) it closes the passage, thereby blocking the air/fuel mixture. Here's a cut away of what I'm talking about.

1. remove the fuel line from the fuel pump and see if you are getting fuel from the tank to the fuel pump. if you are not getting fuel out of this line then you are out of gas or have a clog somewhere.
what are you using for a fuel tank since the body is off the car? vw fuel pumps do not draw fuel up out of a container very well.
2. if you get gas from the line coming from the gas tank then install the line back on the fuel pump and then remove the fuel line from the carb at the carb and place the end in a gas safe container (glass jar) and crank the engine and see if fuel pumps out the end of the hose. if fuel doesn't come out then switch the two lines on the fuel pump and crank the engine and try again. if you are still not getting fuel out the hose going to the carb then something is wrong with your fuel pump. if it is a new fuel pump then you might have the wrong fuel pump rod but we can address that if needed.
start with this and i will start addressing the other issues/questions.
you most crank the engine with the starter when testing. you can not turn the engine over fast enough by hand. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

you did not hurt anything by flooding the cylinder except maybe get some gas in the oil. smell you oil dip stick and see if it smells like gas. if it does then change the oil.
filling the bowl on the carb.
1. you can take the screws out that hold the top of the carb and fill the bowl.
2. you can use a small funnel and feed using the line that goes to the carb from the fuel pump. i use a squirt bottle that you would use for ketchup and mustard. you do not have to remove the top of the carb. work the throttle lever while filling and when it starts to pump and squirt a bit more and stop. feed it like a IV bag.
3. if you look down inside the carb then you will see a large tube sticking up. use the squirt bottle to put gas in the bowl through that tube. you are not going to know how much but you really need just enough to get the throttle arm on the carb to pump gas..
after filling the bowl you should be able to pull the throttle lever and get a few squirts of fuel out of the carb. the should give the fuel pump time to catch up. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

the number one should be where the notch is correct and then 4-3-2.
where is the rotor bug in the distributor in reference with the notch when your pulley is TDC? see picture below.
the notch should line up with the rotor bug. if it is close then you can loosen the clamp at the bottom of the distributor and move the distributor til it lines up. if it is 180 degrees or pointing oppisite to the notch then turn the crank pulley around again til it gets to the notch.

rotor bug at TDC
does this wire go to "+" as
my coil "-" is the green wire
still don't feel like this tube goes there because it used to have a screw in the tube to cover it but who knows
my fuel pump
no gas smell in oil |
