I asked a question in here this am re do Infrared Temp Guns read the temp of the air or do they only read the temp of a mass or an object. I received a link to Wikipedia which of course I read but I already knew that. I asked the specific question again " Can Infrared Temp Guns read air temp? or can they only read mass or objects?
The entire thread has been deleted by someone. I know what they can read, I need to know if they can accurately tell the temp of the air in the centre of a room without pointing it at an object of mass.
Whoever deleted it, you do me an injustice. Legitimate question and I need to know. For what it is worth I think that 'they' can not read the temp in the air, BUT I need to know that. Please don't delete me again without due cause. _________________ 83.5 Vanagon L Riviera Model with 97 1.9L TD AAZ 4 speed Daily Driver 3 out of 4 seasons (for sale)

What he said
But to answer your question: You can't read air temp with an infrared thermometer. I spent 5 seconds on Google and found this: "Temp Guns measure surface and liquid temperatures. These digital thermometers measure air temperatures.".

Can IR thermometer measure air temperature?
Yes and no. No, because air (i.e., Oxygen and Nitrogen molecules) do not absorb or emit infrared radiation. However, you can aim an IR thermometer at anything having the SAME temperature as the air such as a leaf or grass (under sunshade) or indoors such as your desk, a piece of paper having the same temperature as the air.
The key to measuring "air temperature" is to measure "anything that should have the same temperature as the air". |
Being able to research an question is a valuable skill. Just like on the Samba, most questions have already been answered and using searching for it should be done first before asking others.
Get one of these.
And with a signature like this, i'm not sure why I tried to help.
