i have a engine with a date stamp of 1-0334378 (august 1951) with a A on the end and KD on another side of the stand which i think means its factory rebuilt the casting numbers are

generator side= 4 8 10 on the gen stand and 01 02 4 on the base of the
engine. side of the oil pan

near the fuel
pump = 3 8 10 near the fuel pump and 01 01 4 on the base of the
engine. side of the oil pan

any help with finding the original date
thanks
chris

A means Austausch (exchange/change/ rebuilt)
KD means Kundendienst...a Volkswagen-rebuilt engine

Based on this casting date,

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

4 08 10

August 4, 1950 first shift. the number behind the pulley should be identical or within a day. You say it is a 3 so it is
the numbers on the oil sump sides are not date numbers

The stamped in number is probalby the exchange serial number

The number in the typical location on the rear of the generator stand could have been the original engine number of the case that was later rebuilt.

Its always worth looking for a later case. Especially if you can find someone to swap with. Its always worth a hour or two ringing the usual suspects in the UK! Then you rebuild with that case with all the other parts off yours

I have a early 52 block (need to double check the date) that I would swap for something nearer my june 50, still a little way off but closer.

I was miles off as my case is dec 1950!! So no real improvement for you!

Still worth a ring around a few of the vintage guys and dealers tho

I've decided to rebuild it anyway as I've already started taking the case apart. has anyone got any ideas on how to get the last cylinder head stud off as there's not allot of space left for the allenkey/socket its like the rod is abit longer than the rest Question

I welded a nut to a bolt with the right sized head and used that. Worked a treat

I found and old block with these 01.01.4 number, and appears date oct 53...I have another block that at the same place has 111 xxx xxx number.
Is the multiple number appears after the 01 01 4 number. What means that number
