anyone running federal fermozas 165/50-15 or 165/45-15? If you are could you please post a picture for reference. I have some 6" cookie cutters on the way and starting to look for what i will roll.

thanks

I'm running federals, 185/55 in the back and 165/45 in the front. I have hit a pot hole w/ the right front one and caused it to leak slow but no damage to the wheel. It was repaired. High end sight 20/20, I would have gone with 165/50s. That's my suggestion.

Hey, you have to "play" with it and find that sweet spot. I don't have that rubbing problem with the lower ball joint, but I'm running 15" wheels and not 14s. You'll need a second hand, it can be a pain in the ass to adjust your beam.

Ok, thank you... I thought the 'middle' setting was stock height, so I imagined it should only be 2.5" lower, and it's about 8" lower than it was. I'll adjust it up and see what that does.

Any idea about the shocks?

Thanks again for the quick reply, I didn't want to post a new thread because all they would say is 'check the lowering thread', and I know not too many people read the 155 pg behemoth anymore. I'll report back with my success or failure. Smile

You're welcome. Glad I could some what help.

Oil filled shocks? I have no clue. Maybe they're old and worn? See if adjusting your beam will compensate that movement once you raise it. Hand movement... you got me there. Maybe someone else with experience in that field can chime in. Good luck.

You need to grind the bottom of the ball joint at an angle to clear on most 14" rims. I can post a pic later tonight if you need to see it to understand.

What size tires are those? They look pretty big for dropped spindles and adjustable beam. Doesn't surprise me that they would hit the top of the wheel well.

195/70r14 up front, 195/75r14 in the rear. They are tall, and I will be going with a smaller tire up front when I get the money to buy some new wheels. I'm only planning on a 3-4" drop, this is twice that, so I think I'll (hopefully) be ok for the time being once I get the ride height figured out.

Thanks for the grinding the ball joint bolt suggestion. I hadn't read anyone else having to do that, glad it's okay Smile

Its not the upper mount that is a problem. The problem is if I bolt my shock to the stock mount on my hub, the shock would be directly under my frame rail. I have to fabricate a new lower mount onto my hub.

I want to emphasize that its not the upper that I have a problem with, its the lower. Frabrication is not a problem nor is thinking outside of the box. Seeing pics of how others mounted the shock to the hub could spark some ideas for my options. . . . .

Weird. I narrowed the torsion housing in my bus 2.25" each side and was able to use the stock lower mount. Just had to fab an upper and it worked fine. I'll see if I can get a pick of it tomorrow

I finally saved up the coin to order some drop spindles for my 78, took one last peek underneath and realized that - since the last time I thought about this - I have put vanagon alloys on there and I seem to have used up the 2.5 inch gap between the ball joint threads and the bottom/inside of the rim. Am I understanding this correctly? I need that space for the new spindles to drop into, right? I only have like 1.5 inches now. Common problem?

So... I gotta get some different rims or come up with another solution to lowering? But nothing seems as elegant, cheap and simple as spindles...

Is this all correct?

I have finished putting the u-plates on the back, now I am trying to adjust the front to match, but when you put the car back on the wheels, it just drops to the same level. What the hell did I mess up this time?

I disconnected the adjuster from teeth, pushed the wheels down, had to disconnect the shock in order to drop it to the next tooth down on each adjuster (are my shocks TOO short???), tightened the adjusters down 1 tooth higher. Should be good for at least an inch or two, but instead it just drops immediately down to the position it was in before the adjustment...

Any help? Thanks.

Edit: Photos for reference.

This is one tooth from the bottom on both adjusters... It came to me 2 teeth from the bottom. No change when I moved the adjusters...

It needs to go up 2-3 inches so that it can be more level for camping, and so I can haul my fat ass around without rubbing the tires.

According to Nate from Wagenswest... "One tooth on one adjuster is one inch. One tooth on both adjusters is 2 inches, and so on. If you are raising the bus up, you will need to pull down on the wheels. If you want to lower the bus, you will want to use the floor jack under the tire to push the wheels up" Best if you do this with the bus on jacks or on a lift and disengage both adjusters to pull the wheels down so that you're not rubbing with "your fat ass" when you drive it, haha!

Maybe you need to adjust the opposite way of what you're doing now? Good luck!

Those are the instructions I used. I pulled the wheels down and it went to the bottom tooth on the adjusters, I put it there and same place...

I'll try it the other way too in case it's backwards or something, but it seems counter productive.

I understand, I suppose you'll have to "play" with it to get it where you want it.

What? I'm not talking about your mint green van, I thought the van we were talking about and the van in the thread I posted was the van that Wagenswest built "The Hobo"
