I recently purchased a 1982 Westfalia and since I bought it, I have an unusual electrical situation. The low beam headlights do not work with the switch, only high beams with the high beam/turn signal switch. Wipers do not work and heater fan does not work under normal conditions. If I turn on the light switch and turn on the high beams the wipers and fan come on.
I have replaced the headlight switch and the turn signal and wiper swiches but this has not corrected the problem. Any ideas? |

im not 100% sure your van has one but on my 1986 that problem would be caused by the "X" or load reduction relay- cuts power to items you mentioned during cranking. the relay maybe stuck even when not cranking. if not that try the ignition switch. _________________ asking the questions no one has an answer to since 4/16/10 |

Most likely your ignition switch is bad. Part # 111.905.865L costs $10.00 or less from any of our online vendors.
Try wiggling the keys to see if anything comes back to life.
There are good instructions for removal and replacement here:

You don't have to go to the trouble of pulling off the steering wheel etc just to test the ignition switch.
You can simply pull off the Ign connector, plug it into your new switch and turn it with a flat bladed screwdriver. If all of your troubles go away, go ahead and take things apart! _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Got IT! I swapped out the switch today and it fixed the problem. I now have headlights, wipers and a blower motor on demand without having to have the high beams on. This was a bid hassle when I drove the van from Phoenix to Washington a couple of weeks ago. I had to hold the high beams on full time with small piece of cardboard.
Thanks for the heads up. |
