Still sorting stuff out. Wouldnt start, so tightened push-on connection at starter, new switch (which tested bad with an ohm meter) that I knew was bad. Back to basics. Optima battery has no liquid so no way to test cells with hydrometer. Voltage was slightly low. Put charge on it for a few minutes. Started right up. Generator putting out a healthy 15v. Alarm systems drain batteries when cars sit, and in spite of the hype about Optima's, the amp-hour capacity is low compared to a traditional battery. Cranking amps is a meaningless spec for a small low-compression engine.
Next up, timing. Put timing light on #1 and discovered dizzy clocked 90 off. Degree wheel shows BDC, not TDC, when illuminated by timing light. Anyway, Chinese "009" only has 15 degrees of total advance. Set it for 10 at idle, 25 at full. Add distributor to shopping list. Anyone have the Pertronix mech-vac adv distributor?
Went for a drive and it climbs steep hills like a goat. Stock engine + bus trans overcomes the oversize 29 inch diameter tires. |

Yesterday was 70 degrees, so I took "Hermann" out for some exercise. I needed to go to town for a couple things, so I took the "scenic" route Everything worked fine, I think he enjoyed the trip
Today, it's only 37, so he's back in the garage for a while.

Just got back from my midnight run. It's 70 degrees out! Love it! Had to stop by the local dealer for a picture... or two.

Rolled the Thing out of the garage and chased around the valley looking for parts for the Baja I am building.
I will have to shine it up Friday evening. My local VW club is going on a 120 mile round trip cruise through the hills and back roads of West Virginia Saturday. Going to Fat Alberts Pizza for a club dinner. _________________ The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Yesterday was "safety day" with new Zimmerman rotors on all four corners and a pair of Bosch H4's.
Today.. Fix the weird engine problems. I checked through the ignition and fixed the fouled up distributor clamp (read: through out the EMPI garbage). Somewhere in that process, I noticed the source of my annoying flat spot: the accelerator pump linkage had fallen off of the throttle shaft. Turns out an old valve adjuster nut is a near perfect fit.
Now.. Replace the air filter, pull off the top, and have some fun. |
