Yikes! I could see running those on a drag strip or short bursts but on a road trip to So Cal i'd be a little more than worried about heat distortion and possible cracking of the cylinders.
Looks like they were just spun on a lathe and took off way more than needed. I've seen a few sets done by hand (profiled fins and only removed the needed areas) and yes it's a lot of work but a lot less than rebuilding a perf 36hp engine on the side of the I-5!
I sure hope this works out well Kenny but maybe think about changing those up.
a set of Birals would be nice! pic from Mr Okrassa

So...you CAN polish a turd! or maybe that should be YOU can polish a turd.
I followed the last build too. This is the painful part...waiting to see the final product. Your reconstruction part is always quick, clean and pretty well documented...then the long pause for paint and rim selection etc.
Can't wait to see it finished!! _________________ Half Bus, Half Truck, What the _______? |

I am worried.
Rimco turned the barrels down for me, as I had heard they have clearance issues not only between them, but also for the cylinder tins to fit. It seems to me like they took a fair amount off.
In the meantime... Motor building has come to a complete halt while I'm waiting for JE to make a set of custom poisons for me. I had a little bit of poke, out the top of the Cylinder...

Ken I would try and get some 83MM Porsche 356 cylinders from A A (the fin depth is 11.75 MM). I have 82.5 Porsche 356 and they fit fine with real fins in my 36hp. We just machined the spigots down a little and bore the heads and case out to fit.
You also need to work over the WW Okrassa heads. I gained 8hp by decking and porting the heads. My 1192 36 made 64hp on a flywheel dyno and it's my daily driver with no issues. You should make a LOT more HP with the bore and stroke you're running.
What kind of oil cooler is that?
Looking forward to seeing this in person _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

I'm running mine with maybe a little more fin, no over heating problems, actually quite the reverse. It was a question raised on this thread:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=499975
Looks like the barrel got the fins just turned off on a lathe........Rimco has a tendency to cut too much off. Maybe knife edge the fins to pull the heat off faster. It's some time burning hand work but I think the result is worth it.

It's an Aluminum 356/912 cooler. They are available new and that crowd claims at least 10% cooler oil temps running them.
Jim says the body will be painted by the end of March, so I had better get moving on the parts that bolt in as soon as she's back.
Front beam- I decided to go with a 2" narrowed beam, build from scratch.
I built a quick jig to hold everything straight while welding it.

With regards to the cooler - I can well believe that, as my old 912 would struggle to get up to temperature and stay warm in the UK it was so efficient at cooling... despite the heavy right foot use!

Nice job, what kit are you using to do the welds? _________________ To catch a fish, you must first think like a fish.... |

Thanks! I'm using a Miller Synchrowave 180 TIG welder. I took a night course at a local technical college about 6 years ago. I have a certificate from them as well. I think it states that I am fully qualified to weld decorative fence gates

Oh no... I'm not going to allow Jim to put up pictures of the bus in paint. Not until after the big show. I don't want to show up there and there's like 10-16 other barndoors with the same lime green and white paint job. That would be UBER embarrassing. _________________ C-1 |

Looking forward to seeing the bus in the flesh Ken - we are heading over from Australia again for OCTO/Classic week....this I'm sure will be one of the highlights, as was your last bus a couple of years ago!
Cheers

LOL...
Nothing major to report. I did finish the beam, and I'm pretty stoked with how it came out.
Now I just have to make an exact copy for Trevo's truck... _________________ C-1 |

Well why not make a few extra beams to bring with you to the big show! Oh, and I need a pair of the rear shock mounts that you make. I got the nose cone kit in and installed. It is a thing of beauty. Thanks again for all you do. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

Thanks Man. I won't be making complete beams, there is just too much potential liability. I am planning on offering complete kits so that people can make there own, as it's not too hard, just very time consuming. I was thinking shock towers, the attaching sections for the frame, steering pin mounts, basically everything but the tube. For off-road use only, of course....
I'm also planning on making a run of a really simple rear shock tower set up as well.
A small update form the coast...
Should be in paint by next week. _________________ C-1 |
