|
|
I know this isn't really VW related, but I've made a lot of friends here on TheSamba and I need some help. My niece Niki and her fiance Jake have become finalists in a contest to win a free wedding. They have been together for ten years and have been trying to save for their own wedding for a long time, and winning this contest will mean they can get married this year instead of waiting for who knows how long.
Niki lived with me every summer starting around the age of 12 because her home life was not great. She went with me to a number of VW shows on the East coast, and I taught her how to drive in my old 67 Bug. She and her fiance are hard working and have made a good life for themselves, but they won't get married until they can afford to do it properly. If they win the contest, they can.
Please use the following two links to vote for them on Facebook.
First "like" the hotel

Then "like" the video

Thanks for your help everyone! |

Depends on what your definition of "properly" is. All they need is a justice of the peace or someone similar. It sounds like what is "proper" for them is a big fancy thing. Also, why does she "deserve" it? That word is thrown around quite loosely these days. _________________ Brain Trust member #13

Agree 100% Notch. Funny how cheap me and my wife got by on for our wedding nearly TWO DECADES ago.
If we spent as much time preparing for marriage as we did for weddings, the divorce rate wouldn't be over 50%. If they wanted married that bad, go the Justice of the Peace or elope. _________________ OH SNAP! |

in agreement with NB - we eloped over twenty years ago and our marriage service cost us all of $78, including the license and blood test...
I don't do facebook, so can't help but also think that if you want to get married, get married - waiting for the right time and saving to have a one-time big blowout is a waste of resources (put that money towards a down-payment on a house); if you want to throw a big expensive party that shouts from the rooftops to everybody that you got married, you are doing it for the wrong reasons.... _________________

I understand how some people would see a big wedding ceremony as frivolous, just as many people see the restoration of a cheap, disposable economy car as pointless. Different strokes for different folks.
As for the down-payment on the house, they already have that covered. They purchased a foreclosure three years ago and have been fixing it up and paying the mortgage just like they are supposed to.
Why does she deserve it? Because she's a hard working, thoughtful girl who has worked really hard to rise above her less than adequate past. At one time she was living in a Winnebego with her eight brothers and sisters. She started working at around her 14th birthday and has managed to graduate High school, put herself through college, land a carreer and purchase a home. Most girls with her background end up on welfare or worse.
As for the Justice of the Peace wedding, technically they are probably already married by "common law." This isn't really about a piece of paper.
My wife and I are not people of means, but we gave her support and helped her when we could. The dream of a "White Wedding" might seem pointless to some, but starting a marriage surrounded by all those that love you, in a very special location, and feeling like something truly special is occurring actually does mean something. Very much like the difference between a mass paupers grave and a "proper" funeral. They both accomplish the same thing, but one actually means something to all those involved.
I'm not here begging for money, guys. This wedding will go to one of these couples. I'm just letting you know why it's important and why she deserves it. It won't cost you a dime to vote for her. |

Well put.
I'm amused of what some call frivolous... the ultimate definition of frivolous to me is the massive nerdy online jack-off session ongoing in the Snorkelstang thread. Support of THAT project is absurdly frivolous, IMO. |

I rarely fall for these Forum requests like "Help my buddy win best toenail of the year" type crap. I don't like handouts.
BUT
After looking at the other submissions I don't see why Nikki and Jake shouldn't get the dream wedding. Other than he needs to shave that douchebag hair chin thing. From what you've said they are better than average type people and are trying to do well.
I liked both things. Good luck. _________________ CU05

We all get it guys. You don't like to celebrate things. Understood.
To everyone else who do understand why people celebrate, please vote for them. |

Maybe you can get a bunch of local VW enthusiasts to give the couple an air-cooled escort at the wedding.
I decorated my Beetle for a friend's wedding:

Ok, I'm sick of some of the negative comments now so let's stop.
If you don't like it or don't approve, don't vote.
If you want to discuss why or why not to get married, blah, blah, blah, start another thread.
Although I suspect this is better addressed on a different site with more equal female input. _________________ How to: Post Photos | Search
