I forgot that you went to the 1600 longblock from the old 1776. d'oh! Those have wavy washers on the rocker shafts to keep everything tight.

That's the same way I check my linkage when I don't want to pull the filters off and get the sync tool out; just make sure they're opening/closing at the same time.

Have you checked for exhaust leaks? I had trouble getting my old header/hideaway muffler to stop leaking before I swapped it out to the four tip I made from a stock muffler. It made a sound much like loose valves at lower rpms.

John you might be onto something there, I had some problems getting the lower bolt on the #4 cylinder tight, my head stud is shorter than all the rest over there. I put some gasket sealant around the outside of the flange and where the muffler meets the heat exchangers and that quieted down the car (did this a few days ago). Also put some sealant over two small holes in the heat exchangers.

I might go hunting for more exhaust leaks tomorrow and see what I can find.

In other news I drove her to work tonight and she ran fine just loud. It was 85 degrees outside today and she seems to be staying pretty cool. She didn't smell overly hot and the dipstick was hot but not "too hot to hang onto." Just got home and she ran fine the whole way back, dipstick was just sort of warm.

Ordered a cylinder head temperature gauge from Dakota Digital this past Saturday but it won't get here til Monday. Really wish I had some sort of gauges other than the idiot light before I go and drive the car 100 miles on Saturday.

Good choice going with the DD CHT gauge. I've got one in my '64 and it's awesome. VERY quick response times and being digital helps you to be able to read it with just a quick glance. Make sure you keep the wires to the back away from other wires (or use a shielded cable) or else the readout will be erratic. Don't ask me how I know... Embarassed

Took her for a drive today, drove probably 40 miles total and she was great. After the drive the dipstick was hot but not burn my fingers off hot. It's between 75 and 80 degrees outside today and the last 5 miles of my drive were stop and go traffic with lots of sitting at lights.

The low rpm rattle is still there, I think it may just be exhaust leaks though. I have tomorrow off so I'm going to play with that tomorrow, readjust the brakes, and I think Jess and I may put in some sound deadener on the rear parcel shelf/under the rear seat.

Yeah...amazing the car runs and all of my accessories work. The plan is to take it all out and return it to stock. There's an interior map light I want to keep in the car but this time wire it in on a fused circuit. I also need to wire in my cylinder head temp gauge once it arrives plus my tachometer.

Spent some time today putting in some Quick Roof to get the cabin noise down a little bit. For now I just have one layer done on the rear parcel shelf. We'll see how much of a difference that makes tomorrow!

I also readjusted all 4 brakes today, and hooked up the fuel tank breather hoses and the two charcoal canisters. Only problem is the Kadron air filters don't give me enough space to run a hose from the rear charcoal canister to the fan shroud. Even still, hopefully this will take care of the fuel smell inside the car.

Where is the fuel smell the strongest, Front of the Cabin or Rear?

I know that I get a smell when i fill the tank and turn hard left for a few miles. I dont have my charcoal canister hooked up and I always get the smell from the front right of my car. near the tank filler.

Sometimes....most times its part of the "VW" smell. until you replace some interior parts.

If you have a very stong odor of fresh gas, be sure you look around for leaks. Don forget to look inside the tunnel. Once I had an issue with a dripping fuel line inside the tunnel. Didnt know I had an issue until fuel was found seeping at the pedals. Flushed about 2 gallons of fuel out.

Dont confuse fuel with exhaust odor.

Strongest when you first get in the car first thing in the morning. If I've been driving her all day I don't notice it, even if she's been sitting for a few hours. If I don't drive her for a few days and then get in, it smells like gas.

The smell sort of comes and goes though.

In any event, we were planning on going down to Lexington for the Southern Integrity Aircoolers meet today, but the engine spit out the #3 spark plug on the way home. Not sure if it was just loose, if I stripped the threads in the head (doubt it, but possible), or if I have a bad head (hopefully not). In any event, after I put the spark plug back in the rattle is almost completely gone...wondering if the plug was just loose and causing a slight miss.

Ok guys car is up and running again, we just took it for a long drive and it drove fairly well. Still hesitates some at low rpm but otherwise pulled nicely. Still somewhat rattly, not as bad as it was but it's there.

She's running HOT! A long meat thermometer down the dipstick came back at 207* F. It read 212* F in boiling water last night so I'm going to assume it's fairly accurate. It's been 85-90* F all day outside and the roads and parking lots are definitely over 100.

I know 220 is supposed to be the "start worrying point" for oil temps so I'm getting pretty close. The engine smells "hot", even Jessica commented on that. Part of it was some paint burning off and some oil that leaked onto a heat exchanger.

My big question is this, I reached behind the fan shroud to double check that the thermostat is opening all the way. It is and the flaps are open. But I burned myself on the fan shroud in the process-not instant burn, but resting my forearm on the top/rear of the fan shroud and came away with some burns.

Am I correct in assuming that the fan shroud should NOT be getting this hot?

SOB is driving me nuts...

Fuck me and call me a ginger...Just went and took a look at something, I didn't realize there were two different firewall tins.

I have the bottom tin, I obviously need the top tin.

I'm also missing the yellow piece that dumps the hot air over the transaxle.

And, I don't know if this makes a difference, but my heat tubes from the fan shroud just dump under the rear tin, they aren't long enough to run straight to the heat exchangers.

I'm guessing that these three things account for my hot engine.

Looks like I'm going to be doing a little shopping and not driving the car for a few days til parts get here.

Those tins are important. Your recirculating the hot air from your oil cooler back into the engine. Maybe you can cut a hole in the back tin from under the car. You can definitely put the green and yellow tin with the engine in. I've done it a few times.

I already bought a firewall tin and yellow tin and some fresh air house long enough to run straight to the heater boxes. Should be here sometime later this week!

Also, short video (sorry it's out of focus) going through the gears at full throttle. Doesn't seem that fast, I may not be getting full throttle. I'll check that while Jessica is still around to step on the gas while I look at the carbs.

Well I got my Dakota Digital CHT gauge today. It's very nice and the wiring was actually quite easy. I had the whole thing hooked up in under an hour. I just need to make a little mounting bracket and we'll be good to go!

Made a little video about the process, if you haven't noticed making little videos about the car has been pretty fun for me lately. I know they're not that great-no tripod, half of them done with a cell phone, all one continuous shot, no editing or cross cutting, etc. But I have fun.

This is totally off topic. Bit i see the dash is white. The doors are white. Rear tray is white. But the outside is orange? Gonna take it down to the white?
