| I know that the aftermarket tanks out there don't fit Ghias without a fight...they're supposed to fit late Bugs and Ghias. But, are the og. Bug tanks the same as the Ghias?? I'm in the market for a used og. tank from a buddy of mine and not sure what the differences are, if any. Can somebody fill me in? |

| I understand that a '68 Ghia has a 1 year only gas tank. Your post only says "late" style, which in terms of a gas tank would be '69 and later. As far as the aftermarket tanks go, there is no difference between the ghia and standard beetle replacement you would be sold. |

This would be for a '73 Ghia. I've heard that the aftermarket tanks out there don't fit 100%...something to do with the filler neck. But, I'm curious about an ORIGINAL Bug tank vs. the Ghia tank. I guess at this point my best bet would be to put them side by side and compare. |

I have a '69 Ghia and a tank from a parted out '74 Beetle (not SB). As near as I can tell with the tanks sitting next to each other, they're the same.
The proof would truly be when I went to install it in my Ghia, but to the naked eye, there's no difference. |

The tank is the same, the filler neck is ghia specific (note 141 prefix part number):

An original VW tank should fit fine.
The problem with the aftermarket tanks is, that most of the time, they do not fit the most narrow part of the Ghia trunk.
A Ghia Trunk space gets more narrow as you get closer to the nose of the car. The way the aftermarket tanks are stamped out and welded, the corners scrape the walls of a Ghia trunk as you install it. It will not sit flush unless you bend or cut the corners of the tank. This can lead to the tank leaking.
OEM tanks have these corners already cut.
The filler neck is Ghia specific but any OEM type 1 tank should work. |

OK...forgive me here but, when you say "filler neck", you're referring to the part (seperate from the tank) that I stick the nozzle into when I fill up at the station....not the flange that's welded to the tank where the rubber hose attaches, right??? I'm not quite sure how to interpret what you folks are saying. |

| I put a 68 bug tank into the 68 Ghia. Just had to reroute one hose. Picked up an old bus sending unit for five bucks. Worked out great. |
