Has anyone priced out the individual pieces and compared it to the kit?
I plan on ordering the kit to save myself the hassle of ordering everything separate, and the time cutting each piece, but I am always curious to see what the difference is.... |

Sure. The answer, as always, is http://ratwell.com/technical/FuelHoses.html And also http://ratwell.com/technical/VacuumHoses.html
Lengths required are included. If you want to spend more time driving and less time measuring stinky little stumps of hose, just buy Scott's kit, which have been custom built by model year to give you exactly what you need for your car, and nothing that you don't.
Lemme try again on the gates hose: http://gates.com/barricade
This stuff seems to addressed all of the fuel line problems we've been having running ancient hose from CONTINENTAL/COHLINE. Is anyone running this, or have they even looked at it?

just did
seems to be a bit of overkill & it does not appear to be metric sized.
what kind of pricing have you found on it? _________________ '71 - 1600DP, C/W - 32NDIX - o19

The metric sizing doesn't especially concern me, as the pliability in the hose (plus an ABA or GEMS clamp) will more than make up for the hose being undersized for the pipe by 0.65mm.
Also, I don't have any financial interest in this either. I'm looking for better solutions than we had 30 years ago.
The barricade hose is surprising affordable (2ft for $4) when you consider that there's nothing else out there that I've been able to find that is:
- CARB Approved
- R14 rated (run pretty much anything from moonshine rotgut to jet fuel through it, its rated for it.)
- Temp rated -40C to 125C
- working PSI 225
The data sheet from ContTech on the classic 7mm FI line (again thanks to Ratwell for doing the dirty work) http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FuelHoses/Datasheet211080.pdf
- lists fuels as just 'gasoline or diesel'
- operating temp of -35C to 90C
- 116 PSI proof pressure (different from working pressure)
By comparison, the Continental stuff everyone in the VW hobby resells is lucky to make an R7 rating. Meaning the 15% ethanol junk that is either coming or has already arrived at a pump near you is eating our hoses alive.
I'm looking for a proactive thing to do, rather than just deciding to invest a benjamin in new fuel hoses every 12 months for the rest of my life. The Barricade hose seems like it has made huge strides toward making 'the burning bus' a bad memory, rather than an ongoing terror. _________________ This Type4 engine brought to you by Wilson, Bentley, Muir & Muldoon

webwalker; if you go with this 1/4" hose, please give us a report on the ease of installation; especially the tight fit caused by using slightly small hose. .65mm smaller doesn't sound like much, but does it cause installation to be a real pita, or not...? _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia

webwalker,
if you ever need a bus a practice on.....i am right down the road
i bought the fuel lines from Scott, i can see how they can get pricey if replaced every year as encouraged. i just never knew of another option and bought the kit out of fear..... _________________ Just another VW girl driving a bus....

Earl,
I'm not saying that Scott doesn't provide a fantastic service. He DOES. He was the only one who could scare up the correct RED and GREEN vac hose in the right size(s) for the resto of my 1972 SB. The air may not care about the color of the hose, but the judge does. Or should. Scott was the only one who could make it appear. Likewise, he's done all the hard work of providing a complete kit of the right size hoses on a year specific basis. So if you want to install and go, he's your guy.
The Barricade hose has only been on the market for about 15 months as far as I can tell. The fact that they got the CARB blessing is amazing, too. I think I can afford to be the community guinea pig for these, but y'all are going to need to be patient: my barn find 77 might get on the road this year if everything goes....right.
Earl, PM me and let's see if we can sync up.

Anyone know the make of the hose in the "smooth rubber" upgrade? _________________ Wayne

On Scott's website it states that the kit is made to order and can take several weeks. It's quality and everything one needs to do the job right. _________________ Special Thanks to:

| I made it easy for myself and went to a john deere dealer and bought there German made braided fuel lines. They work great and I ended up buying 20 feet to keep some in my bus box for spare. I figure if they are using them on mowers and tractors that get really hot, they would work. |

That is too bad. Scott is a good guy, and he sells really good stuff. I agree that he could sharpen up on the shipping / customer service end of things. I have a big order in with him right now, and I cannot afford to wait too long for it to arrive. We are lucky to have a place that sells good quality parts, and that certainly goes to his credit as a retailer. _________________ *****************

He is a great guy,has quality parts and is willing to go above and beyond for anyone. I'm satisfied with the products I've ordered from him, and was willing to wait. While he may not have the fastest shipping, at least what I've gotten is right and quality is superb. Take the time to do it right is fine with me..... _________________ 1979 Westfalia Deluxe http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=474334&highlight=iowa |

One thing I can say, is that I needed to order a bunch of parts, and I was looking for the best quality stuff that I could readily get my hands on, like Kolbenshmidt and Goetze, etc. I would have had to shop at about 5 different places to assemble everything on my list, but one trip to Scott's and I got it all in one big buy. That made life so much easier, and it is times like this that I really appreciate his store. A little fine tuning on the shipping and return process, and he would be untouchable. Bus Depot is damn good too, and they have never failed me, but Scott sells some items that you just can't find a BD. It would be foolish to write Scott out of the will entirely. Besides, what other retailer comes onto these pages and provides people good advice on their repair issues? _________________ *****************

Well put. In my experience, Scott sells only the best available. Nice not to have to wade through several options of the same part and speculate about relative differences in quality. I have experienced both fast and slow shipping from GS, but the products themselves have always been top notch and the prices fair. |
