I havent been on here in a while. I got my muffler welded back on and securly bolted down. I got my surfboard fixed, but i didnt get tires. Sad

But i have still been driving the crap out of the car. It was my daily driver for last week and the week before. We had the first good rain around here which caused some good mud. I took advantage of an open gate and went and slung some mud around in an open feild.

I started school for the fall semester, so now i have about 16 hours a week for my self to do what i want. So i wont be working on the bug much, although it deos need the carb cleand out.

A list of what needs to be done (just to remind me in the future):
-Make something so that the front bumper can be bolted on better
-Plumb the posative crakncase tube to the air cleaner, or get a breather kit
-Tune up (sparkplugs, wires, valve adj., timing, idle set)
-Tires!

I ordered new tires today, just rear ones. I got some bf goodrich KM2 30x9.5 they should be here monday. I really wanted to get all four, but im still looking for front wheels that are a little skinnier then what i have on right now. i want those 700x15 (or something similar) for the front. But on the other hand, i really like the idea of having 4 new tires on the car insted of 2.

I havent been on my page for a while. My computer crapped out again, so i wasnt able to upload some new pics of tires.

Here they are. Theyre beefy looking, but they dont handle as good on-road as the last tires. But thats ok, cuz its really an off road vehical. So far they have gotten really good traction off-road so im happy with them. What i did realize is that with new tires, my car is actually more dangerous now. Before, the loss of traction around corners off-road forced me to slow down. With the good traction now i can go a lot faster.

Whats to come:
I got a phat load of cash, which is just enough to get some new KM2's for the front. I really wanted to get some skinnies for the front, like 700x15's, but i would need to get new wheels since mine are 10" wide. So im just settling with some 215/75r 15's. I got to special order them tomorrow. Thats it for now.
Ohh, and the thing has been my daily driver for a while now. Actually i went to start up my 01' civic last night and i had to crank the motor for about 30 seconds to get it to start. I dont think i have ever really heard the starter before.

Some other shananagins, i got my front bumper bolted on much better. I cut away some of the shock towers so i could weld a 1.5" tube to the beams tube. It was kind of a tedious process b/c i would bolt the bumper on, measure, remover bumper, cut, put bumper back on, measure ect.ect.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Its welded on, but there is a few spots i wasnt able to get to so the tubes arnt fully welded. But once they rip off, im cutting the hood back a bit, trimming the fenders, remaking the hood hinge (again) and building a completely new bumper with a gigantic skid plate on it.

So, i scored the KM2's for the front. I also found out that both my front wheels are bent. The shop had to put 10.5 oz of counter balance weight on one wheel. There are weights on about 1/3 of the wheel. So i guess i should save up and buy not bent wheels so the tires last longer.

Other then that, i havent done much. Im pretty busy with school. But the baja has been a near daily driver. I use it for going out to the coast on surfing trips, 60 miles round trip. I still take it on a few hot laps after work around the neighborhood wheelin' spot, and the girls are still smiling at me when i drive by, so its doing me good.

But im starting to really dream about a toyota motor in it. Im hoping by this time next year i will have a 091 tranny on a 10* kit, disk brakes up front and a tube bender. I figure thats all i need to start working on a 22re conversion. My friend has a 22re turbo motor in a truck sitting in his yard. He told me i can have any thing off the truck except for the steering components. SCORE! Except that he did take the hood off the truck and the valve cover off the engine and then left it out in the rain about a year ago. So i dont know how good it will be, but on the other hand, i know the 22re's are tought little engines, so with some hope, it will be good.

So, the tranny in my honda civic blew out about 3 weeks ago, so the baja has been my one and only form of transportation. And its working good! I havent had any breakdowns or any troubles out side of an idling issue. (sometimes it idles too high, sometimes too low. And it kind of comes and goes...its weird)

So since i have been driving it a lot more, im more motivated to fix the little bugs it has, and add little upgrades.

added a flashlight holder

And made vents that redirect air to go over the windshield instead of into my face. They also can be closed. Theyre pretty simple.

And i finally got a pic of it with new tires

I got a call today from ACE, they have my zenith and are going to start rebuilding it. They said it should be done by then end of the week, so with hope, i will have it back by the end of next week and on the car. I cant wait! Im really excited to be getting a carb which will provide more power, but im more excited about getting a carb that i know will be running at the right fuel/air ratio. It seems like since i got the car 4 years ago, i have never had a carb run consistently. those dam 34pic3 always have a leaking throttle shaft.

The zenith is up and running. Im diggin it too. Its not explosively powerful like i was hoping (i have a bit of an imagination), but it handles the low rpms really well, and it just runs smoooooooooth

Sorry, they're crappy pics

Thanks ryno, stuff stays in it a lot easier then i thought it would.

Today i embarked on building a new roof rack. Its been in my plans for a while and since my honda trans took a crap, and i cant get my 10'6" surfboard to the beach, i was provoked. I miss surfing. Crying or Very sad

So, with out any plans drawn out, no pictures to follow and no measurments at all, I started bending tubing. It took one stick to figure out how to make measurments, and i went from there. I had a slight idea of what i wanted, but not much.

So here is how far i got today.
Made 3 hoops that go from drip rail to drip rail.
Welded in 26" bars between the 3 hoops.
Welded a piece of 1/2" stock to the bottom of the feet so they sit in the drip rail better
Welded chain links to the outside of the drip rail to be used to anchor the rack down with a few turn-buckles.
I only did the 1/2" stock and chain links on one side. Tomorrow i will finish the rest. Then i need to bend one piece of tubing and weld the butts together to make the top, horizontal hoop. Cut and notch some tubing to hold that top, horizontal hoop. Then cut and notch about 6 more 26" pieces that run from front hoop to middle hoop, and rear hoop to the middle hoop. Ya picken up what im layin down?
I might also reinforce the legs with some more tubing.

Why all this reinforcement? B/c its 3/4" EMT conduit tubing. Thats why.
Do i expect it to hold a spare wheel? Maybe if im just driving down the highway, but not off road. However, i will be testing that.
Its mainly just for my board and some extra lights.

I got some good things done today! Though i have completely forgot about finishing the roof rack (it holds my surfboards, so im happy).

Got my speedo working! I scored a cable from a 1984 944 porsche at pick n pull. Im sure it dosnt read the correct speed, but its some where close.

I also got my volt meter gauge set up. After i got it working i realized what a joke it is to have a volt meter. It dosnt tell you any thing important. "You have 12 or more volts running, but im not sure if your battery is getting drained or recharged, thats my friend the Ammeter's job. Good luck"

But im curious to know if 13-14 volts is what it should read while the car is running? I have a bosch 75 amp alternator.

My next important gauge im trying to get working is the oil temp gauge. Mine is the 250*F gauge, not the 300* gauge every parts dealer sells. This poses a problem b/c the senders are different. Every where i find the sender, its either for a 300* gauge, or its the one for the 250* gauge, but the sender goes into the oil drain plug. That will not work for a baja since the motor bottoms out occansionaly. I need the the sender to go into the oil relief plug, but no one sells a 250*F sender with a thread pitch M18x1.50, even though i called a reputable VDO dealer and got a VDO part number, they cant sell me one however. So, so far i have spent about 5 hours trying to get this dam sender, for a gauge that dosnt even match the other 4 gauges i have in the car......maybe i should just dump about $80 into a matching gauge with a sender.

Well i had to leave the new oil temp gauge idea behind for a little while. On thursday i decided to replace the lower ball joints. I didnt have money to go get new ones pressed in, so i just pulled the trailing arms off one of the spare beams i have laying around. It was good idea that i did replace them b/c the left side was so trashed i could move the ball in and out of its socket about a half inch. Shocked

So i got lucky on that one. However, what should of taken 2 hours ended up being a lot longer. The right side needle bearing was completely trashed and the race was stuck in the tube. I tried to knock it out from the other side with a bar, but that ended up breaking off that lip of the race, so i had no way to know it out. I scored a cylindrical grinding stone at the hardware store and used that to cu through the race.

After i got the old bearing out and the new one in i had to put the spring pack back in. I had adjusters that wern't installed very well, so when i went to put them back together, one of the bolts stripped (the one that is pushed backwards and is about 2 inch long). So now it has no way to stay up. I mended that by drilling holes in the adjuster body and hammering bolts into it, then welding them in place.

I also added some new(used) shocks that come off my spare beam.
Well the thing seems to be driving a lot smoother now. So im happy.

All in all i have realized something.
TIME TO BUILD A NEW BEAM, WITH ALL NEW COMPONENTS

I went on a fun camping trip last weekend i wanted to share with you sambians. I went out in the hills of mendocino to a friends piece of property. We got a lil snow too which was great bc i have never really got a lot of play time in snow.

The first night i was out there by my self again. It was pretty great being teh only person for miles.

The bug did great! Despite the fact that i dont have reverse, i only got stuck once, which was bc i was trying to roost my friends truck with mud while powerbraking the baja while it was pushed up against a tree.

On to the pics

This is an iconic pic for me, one i wanted to redo for quite a while. On a trip out to this same place about 5 years ago, when i had just brought my first baja home literally 8 hours earlier, i stopped in this same spot and took a pic. I think its back on teh first page of this thread.
