Hello all. When i bought my 51 split 3 years ago, it had zwitter/early oval seats with the straight tombstone style backrests. I have a buddy im selling these backrests to for his oval vert, so i thought i would pull them out and swap the seat covers to the split backrests that i picked up a few months ago. Upon test fitting the frames to my seat bottoms, i notice that the split backs dont sit all the way back, but they are resting against the stops. Do i have incorrect seat bottoms? Trying to figure out whats wrong in this equation as i was under the impression that the early seat bottoms were all the same from splits to early ovals. Here are some pictures so that you guys see what im dealing with. Any help is greatly appreciated. The black backrest is the zwitter style backrest and the rusty ones are the split backrest.

Thanks john, im wondering if the location of the pivoting pin on the seat bottoms are different. It seems that moving them forward would allow the backrests to sit properly, although i dont know if that is the correct solution.

That is what it looks like to me in your picture. Perhaps get a measurement of the pin location on your oval seat bottoms and I should be able to get one on mine. Although I sold my '50 last year, I have the original seats from my '51.

Upon further inspection of the seat bottoms, i have a feeling that the excess padding on the back end may be responsible for throwing me off regarding how the backrests sits. Ill expose the seat bottom if necessary as well.

Hi,
my opinion is that the springbasket must move to the front.
You can corect this when you pull the springs on the upper frame to the rear.
and the springs on the loer frame to the front. You can also corect on this way the right position in the middle.
And put all that plastikstuff inside to the trash.

Well, looks like my seat bottoms are very different when compared to yours as well. The spring frame has an extra outer frame on the front and back sides and it seems that the seat track is longer on the back end as well. Based off of the seat track slides, They look similar to what would be on a 53-54 oval, but I only find gallery images with the rear outer frame piece, not the front.

On another note, it does seem that my backrests follow the same profile as a picture of backrests in the gallery.

Yeah, i believe the splits have the front double railmas well. It appearsmthat a seriesmof clips hold the front and rear ones on. Im gonna see if i can remove the rear. Still unsure as tomwhat year these bottoms actually are.

Could you measure the lenght please.

I'm afraid I have the same problem.
Before giving mine to the interior guy i perhaps need to take off my rear rail.

I got 19 5/16 measuring from the rear that you specified to the front, including the outer front frame. Also, i did not conform the tape to the contour of the seat, just ran it straight to the front. When i measure including the double outer frame on the front AND the rear, i get 20 1/2. But without the rear piece, its 19 5/16. And i have looked at the seats and it appears that the rear outer frame is detachable.

Also, i dont believe you do have the same problem. I believe the split seats are supposed to have the front double rail, just not the rear.

I have the double rear rail like yours. I wasn't sure my bases were original ones.
I just bought split backrest as I thought the bases were the same.
My split was a big puzzle when I bought it.
