after all the drama of emergencies and distractions, I finally got back to the right rear trail arm-- seems it needs it's own hub position tool because the vw hubs are slightly canted towards the ground to offset the load modulus of the arm.
re-establishing the right hub position from scratch

and the hovering 735i hub

I stole another brake drum lug face for this one and filed the holes to fit the beamer after I welded the bridge [locating the vw position.]
then it was sparky time
- I got lazy after realizing I lost my 3 special filler pieces, so I bleachered 1/4" key stock in there for the fill welds. it shaped easyand welded just as nicely

are swayaway half shafts made in america? I'm sick of sending my dough far away someone said all of empi's inventory is chinese now..screw that.
I got some 1" wood dowel cut to my prelim lengths for the halfshaft modeling. Running the arms through their travel arcs will define the final length with 1/4 to 1/2" end play. just as soon as the ground dries...

I actually saw this van for sale again recently on cl and it needed a trans and had teething problems. wouldnt pass smog, etc. dont remember the price-- this is the cycle for poorly selected conversions.
the engine is too large and too much for the transaxle. you could buy 3 engines for what reinforcing the trans would cost. it depressed me so I didnt copy it.

Hi Todd, does the fact that you welded in the BMW hubs complicate your efforts to fabricate new axles?

the cup is tighter in there, but i still have a 1/4" space all around-
the boots have to be tapered and still might touch the spring pad gusset
we'll see
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
the right side is the weak link in this combination. setting the e/t back 1.5" adds to the clearance issue. I will probably install travel limit straps on the shock bolts with a waist tie to shorten up the stroke an inch--maybe.
this powertrain was intended to be 7" off the groundin the sedan and I am 8", which contributes too. I am glad I had those drive flanges made or this would be a deal breaker. I'd probably have to move the e/t forward and to the left a bit to give it more length, but it will be alright.
I only post this stuff because I have never seen anyone measure for custom half shafts before [photos]. as usual, you all are along for the right of discovery.
I pussed out and ordered taiwanese empi shafts in a kit 18.24" and another pair at 15-5/8" for the right.
It will be 800.00 but the sway-a-ways with stock lobros and boots with only one mismatched pair was 1100.00 bucks and sway-a-way is d.o.a. with service. they don't return phone calls.
they will have to be cut down- four lobro cv's with loose offroad settings for this angular oddity. they will rattle a little in turns- taper boots and plates-- but I went back to the jy for bmw cv bolts because I cant find the original sets to save me--frustrating- thats what happens with large distractions.
as it stands now, the right axle is 14" and the left is 18".

the stick excersize was for ballpark dimensions and were just the priliminary first part. since I posted all the other posts about not seeing anyone else do this, I have since found the syncro guys doing this in depth. I salute them for the intel-
I took my old bmw sedan halfshafts apart
the bmw lobros arent good for this app-- they dont telescope enough.

I just bought another donor car to haul my mom in and eventually steal the e/t out of. it's a 97 dodge intrepid sport with paddle shifter......45k miles!!! 2800.00 bucks where kelly blue said 4200.00. great goodyear tires and a pristine interior. I just got fuel rail o-rings for it coming tomorrow and the top end gaskets-[v covers, etc] nice power. the trans has tall gearing-- second gear tops out at 80. ac is super cold, etc.

Semi-unrelated, but, since the photos are elsewhere, then what the hell--this is the son of vanagon lhs-- the previa lhs. scaled viability study drawings using the same powertrain as the vlhs--here goes

and the related chassis and e/t stuff- the right side of the drawing is the rear of the van

much more room than the vanagon between the stringers at 43" as opposed to 23". the ho 3.5 with aluminum block and precats in the manifolds will fit here--and the coachworks are nicely different too

Taking a wild-ass guess, I'd say that's a crank sensor mount for Megasquirt-N-EDIS in a Duesenberg...?
