I decided to get up early and go do some exploring in the mountains. I like to look for weird little towns kinda off-the-map, and a coworker told me about this one...It's unpaved (apparently because they don't want through traffic) and the whole town was silent and still when I drove through, except for one maniacally-barking dog.
I had that feeling like I was being watched through windows, but there wasn't a soul around...I was sufficiently creeped out and totally dug it.
I wanted to see the Four Mile Canyon burn area, so headed over there and checked it out.
I went back by Nederland and headed to Rollinsville (saw a powder-blue aircooled Westy sitting in the snow) and then through the gambling Mecca of Central City; nobody was awake there, either.
All in all, it was a nice little morning 100-miler, and the Vanagon drove like a dream. I spotted one '90/'91 white Westy coming down Boulder Canyon and a bronze-beige '86 (with a green sliding door) also in the canyon.
Great way to spend a Saturday morning. _________________ Joe T.

Took the afternoon off, loaded the dog crate (too large to fit in the Mopar minivan unless I remove the seats) into the Westy, and drove to the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter to pick up our new mutt, an as-yet-unnamed pointer mix. Hope she likes Westy camping. She seemed to enjoy her first ride.

Drove the 80 miles or so out to Ramona, CA to watch the Super Bowl with family. Hwy 78 from Escondido to Ramona will test the best suspension on a Vanagon. Vinnie was in fine form with new Bilstein HDs on the front.
Ramona is beautiful this time of year. But as much as I admired the Ramona landscape, I liked my new Pathfinder Tire Rack even better.
I need to finish the mounting bracket backing plates and then buy another rim/tire to slap on there.
Them there Ramona-ites sure are dumb . They've got to mark their fences so they know which direction they're facing.

Just as important is what you did WITH your Vanagon or Westy after you finished working on it |

With the van Sunday I drove self and dog over Snoqualmie pass for some skijoring (dog pulls in harness ahead of skier). Moderately sloppy winter driving conditions. Enjoyed the Hakkapeliitta tires, narrowly avoided a 5 or 6 car spinout bumper car mess, and liked very much the new (leap year sale) programmable wiper relay. Also first long run with new fuel pressure regulator--am I just imagining better mpg? Lots of sled dogs around, I think my wheels got peed on. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.1 WBX |

After a long vacation from my get away 82 Vanagon, my father, myself and a trusted mech have gotten The Blue Pearl back on the road. I had my doubts about the purchase of this Van, and was thinking of selling her and getting a new Harley. However after getting everything nailed down getting down the road with my wife Holly. Going off the grid in Texas City and Galveston I am glad we have her!

Loaded up the Syncro Westy with skis, dogs and DW and headed to Stevens Pass, WA. Awesome day with sunshine, new snow and great company. The Van ran flawlessly. _________________ Tom

came home from camping. a bittersweet, special little trip. not far from home, but long way to go for my dad. first camping trip together in our westys since his open heart/bypass/valve replacement/carotid artery surgery in Nov. in Feb. he had his 87th birthday.
ok, this took guts.
my mom went along, a short interlude from her sweet, back to childhood trip.
I could write a book, I think. but it was wonderful, if a lot of effort, to get away. photos to follow. |

Just took a little 3 day camping trip with the wife and kids over to Cedar Key. Saw some parts of Florida I never would expect to see. Nice rolling hills with some very impressive farms/stables. Reminded me of Southern Virginia. Not the flat Florida one expects to see. The bugs definitely didn't disappoint either Gotta say, I've been driving the shit outta the van lately and am wondering why I hadn't done so sooner. In the past 6 weeks it's been to Key West, Lakeland and now Cedar Key. Ran sweet every mile and maybe used a 1/4 of a quart of oil Where to next......... _________________ '83.5 Vanagon GL

Just got home from a weekend in Orange County. Saturday we stumbled around the Orange County Swap Meet. Spent the night in a motel. My wife ran a 5K at Knott's Berry Farm this morning. We stopped by Mrs Knott's afterward to pick up some Boysenberry Pie. Vinnie the Vanagon ran great all weekend.

Put the new coolant hoses and fuel lines to the test by driving far away from "civilization". (and arrived home victorious)
