Windshield Wipers

I have what I believe to be a Corsair, and I am trying to determine the best way to install windshield wipers as I am currently redoing the buggy from top to bottom. I have two of the hotrod type motors, and my current thought is to separate the dash from the hood, install the motors, and then reattach the dash to the hood. This would adding 1-2" material, stretching the dash by the same amount towards the driver. There is plenty of room in the cockpit for this, and the work is doable. Until now I haven't been able to imagine another way.

In reading some old posts, I found this discussion about wipers .

Before purchasing anything, should I actually expect a beetle wiper assembly to fit? It sure looks as though nothing more could fit under there .... I will be simplifying my dash considerably, and am going with a new set of thin gauges...

Question - do you those of you with windshields and wipers have full assemblies? Do you think a stock setup would fit under my dash?

My prefered method of installing the wipers on a buggy is to drop them in the nearest trash can. Laughing

I use a hand operated wiper to clear the condensation from the windshield when driving to work in the early morning hours.
If you drive a buggy in the rain without a top, you will soon see that you need wipers on the inside as well as the outside of the windshield.

The old motors will fit. I don't think you will have to change anything.

If you use an old style assembly with a 12v motor(1967ish), you will need wiper arms from a bus or will need to lengthen the beetle arms.

Aside from being a legal necessity, wipers can come in handy when you need to see where you're going. I finally got around to modifying a pair of Rabbit arms to work on my buggy. I've used them twice in the last month. Like lostinbaja said, it's good to be able to get rid of the condensation. Rain-X never worked on a flat windshield for me.

Thanks for the input. I have had the car for several years and have not ever needed them. There has only been arms and blades in place for looks, but there was nothing underneath. The car has been registered as antique, which means no inspection needed, but with the work I am doing I would like it to be fully legal. I could take off the windshield each year (no windshield is ok, but having one means working wipers are needed), but this would mean Id have to fab a plate for the stickers and keep them there all the time rather than on the glass. Hand wipers are no longer legal in Texas. Again, given the amount of work being done and the many small fiberglass patches, doing this now the right way now seems to be worth the work.

None of the boneyards around me would have the assembly, so Ill search the classifieds and ebay and also call the local shop. Im sure I can come up with one cheaper than the CIP new one to try out. I had always thought there would be no way a stock assembly could fit under there .... but Im not sure how big, and what shape, they really are.

Stretching the dash to use the individual wiper motors I have would mean that they would never be in sync ... this would be as embarrassing as it would be humorous.

We've had our fair share of driving in the rain...

Rain-X is good, I normally treat the inside before every long trip. We found that if you can resist using the wipers for a few minutes, the water will start to perl on the windshield and you don't need them. That is in normal rain of course.

Mount a Thing wiper motor on the pass side, use the link bar from a Thing to pull the driv side back and forth. It will get the wiper motor out of the speedo way.

(A Thing wiper motor mounts direct to one wiper shaft, then uses a drag link to pull/push the other wiper. The drag link rod is hooked on to the wiper arm itself)

Again, thanks for the suggestions. Before cutting the dash, Ill scrounge around for either a stock beetle or thing assembly to test fit.

Funny - I did just order a set of gauges from Speedhut, including one of the thin GPS speedos.

I need to put together a post regarding my build so far and the plans for the near future.

I'm in the middle of Spring cleaning on my buggy and just did a tuneup on my dragging wiper motor. Wipers are required here, and I have had to use them regularly.

And, I picked up a box of parts with a few unknown year wiper assemblies. If you don't find something local I can dig through it and see if I have anything useful. I have the parts I need for now, maybe someone else needing wipers can get some use out of this stuff.

I recently finished the wipers on my Nostalgia. I used a late 60s - early 70s type 1 wiper assembly, super beetle arms, and 10" blades. The wipers are set to park on the right side and the arms needed minor straightening to keep the blades on the glass. Very Happy

One thing to remember - if you use a Type 1 assembly, the motor is on the front side of the unit and actually sits under the hood and does not protrude much into the dashboard space. I have a stock speedometer, 4 VDO gauges and the stock wiper motor and everything fits. It's tight, but it all fits fine.

my wiper spacing is the normal 15 3/4 and has a decent amount of room under the dash. What suggestions do you have for mounting?
