Traded my friend a motorcycle for my Ghia I previously owned 11 years ago. Spent most of its time covered in dust in a garage, but now sits out in the weather under a car cover.

It spent 18 years in downtown LA, before my sister gave it to me and I drove it to Bellingham Washington from Berkeley CA. The motor is tired now and has battery draw issue.

Supposedly it was raced at SIR (now Pacific Raceways) back in the day by the original owner. (I'm the third). I spent some time on the Vanagon forum an learned a lot there.

Congrats! IMO, 1969 is the best year for a driver ghia: first year of the independent rear suspension (IRS) and last year with the small taillights and front blinkers.

The poor car needs door hinges bad. I can't drive the car with shoes on, the pedals are so close with my wide feet.

Anywhere you folks could suggest starting regarding battery not holding a charge? Is there a certain place in the wiring harness that to likes rub on the chassis?

I cleaned and die electric greased all the connections in the engine bay, but didn't do anything with the alternator internally yet.

Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

Welcome back to the club; from a fellow `69 owner. Oh yeah, the best year! She's got a nice "little lower" stance, too.
The best place to start exploring charging issues (after cleaning connections) is with a simple volt meter. 13 plus volts at the battery when revving the engine says that the charging system is functioning.

I might try to make it if my charging system allows. The little red idiot light stays on, so my generator or alternator or whatever you call it may not be doing its job.

I should be able to make a 10 mile round trip on a fully charged new battery right?

C21darrel. thanks for the fat feet link. Very cool all the after-market products for these old cars.

A generator would be basically the same diameter as your pulley, an alternator (which wouldn't be stock, but a good upgrade) is larger in diameter at the pulley and narrower toward the fan shroud.

Hope to meet you soon!

How's the food? It's supposed to be nice on Saturday and my Ghia needs some exercise...

Here are a few more pics. I"m guilty of doing next to nothing with it since i got it back. Just sitting in the driveway. Sad.
There was a drywall nail in the rear tire, plugged it with a motorcycle plug and greased some electrical connections, but that's it.
I've drove it maybe 25 miles tops, since I reacquired it.

Regarding the food, its fair to medium, but many other choices close by.
