Thanks for the compliments!
Yes I thought about whitewalls for a day or two, but I really like the blackwalls. I think it gives the car more of a modest, utility look. After all it was just somebody's beater to get back and forth to work

Wow what are the odds? Thats awesome Samba is everywhere. I didn't see you I was trying to catch up to my buddy's bus. I can't believe you recognized the car thats really great! And I literally just hopped on only to get off on the next exit for a Western Auto run. Where were you coming from? _________________ My '57 build:

Carpet showed up the other day, so I hopped to it the first chance I got, in between repainting some wheels and other parts I got back from the blaster.
Laid out the padding on the rear luggage shelf and wheel wells and then installed carpeting.
Its really high quality stuff and nicer than anything I've ever used in the past. I went with Oatmeal Squareweave from WW:

| Your Color Choice's are really paying off. That oatmeal weave's gonna work great especially with kids. Have you noticed if your Sound Barrier install is everything you thought it would be? Keep em Coming. |

There's plenty of DIY flaws, but I gotta admit I am really liking the color combo even more than I thought I would when I decided not to go black on the exterior. As for the soundproofing It is much quieter, however the trans is much louder than other aircooleds I've driven since they have all been newer. It kinda muffles the tinny sound, but you still feel like you are in a VW if that makes any sense. My son laughs when I accelerate, its the best thing ever. He sits on the hump and appreciates the carpet and padding

Kjell,
FWIW, I don't think there is any difference between Nile Beige & Prairie Beige. I think VW just changed the name for marketing purposes as part of the switch from 55 to 56. Years ago, VWTrends ran a piece an a low mileage late 55 US spec Nile Beige that looked almost white, then I saw photos of your ride and thought that looks an awful lot like Prairie Beige. I now think the VWTrends car either wasn't Nile Beige or the photos just didn't even come close to the true color. |
It has been some confusion about when the Nile beige color started. In the progressive refinement catalogue, it says from 4. august 1955, but the list here on theSamba said march 1955 until I send a mail to Everett last year about it. I think the bright car in VWTrends is a Light beige, hit by the color confusion.
Heres a wonderful Light beige:
Here is my car, to the left, and a prariebeige to the right. Not much different, but the Nilbeige is a tad browner/darker.
Both pictures taken at Bad Camberg last summer.
The difference is bigger in the sunlight.
Love this thread!

Finished up the carpet installation. Also I installed a really nice screw terminal horn that my Dad picked up for me. Nice one Dad thanks!
Back seat support back from the blasters and painted and installed. I added a strip of padding since I thought it might cut down on vibration. From the factory it looked like a felt tab was there, but its gone now.
My son says its a lot more comfortable in the back now that its "fuzzy". He's wearing a helmet for safety

Very nice. It's funny how roomy the back looks with your son sitting back there. Must be nice to be small, To him it's probably a huge car . Also it looks like you need to Rotate your Steering Column Counter Clockwise, I think the Contact should hug the bottom of the dash more. The picture makes it look like it's almost pointing straight down. Keep em coming. |

Thanks. Yes I am aware the horn contact needs to be more in the 2 or 3 o'clock position. I planned on fixing that when I install my turn signal wire cover that I recently picked up and painted. Its very low priority though, trying to get things done and on the road. _________________ My '57 build:

Thanks! 56-63 had black painted logos on the caps.
Not sure if this applies to just US exports or what. _________________ My '57 build:

Didn't do much of anything to the car all weekend. Enjoyed time with the family.
My son asked if he could help and detailed out the fenders and the wheels.
Is Herman smiling? (I might be losing it)

Thanks! Not sure whats goin on on Monday, but at this point I might be headed to CA for work for a better part of the week so we shall see. Maybe I can score some parts out in the holy land
Car has taken a back seat to other responsibilities, but before that I was able to get some things done:
1. Steering Column moved to correct position (thanks lovethatconvertible, good catch)
2. Wire cover for turn signal installed
3. Running boards painted, assembled, and installed
4. speaker delete installed
5. Wheels are getting repainted, went through a lot of color combos and drove my family nuts
6. Driver door hinge pin removed after weeks of soaking in Kroil, and hours of patience with a hammer and punch. Mirror pin installed.
7. seat belts installed for kids (fronts will require more work so they are reinforced properly)
Seat upholstery showed up and was all wrong, waiting on my 2nd special order .
Wife ok'd new door panels too and TMI apparently makes a decent 56/57 smooth door panel, we shall see!
Some pics:
IGNORE THE WHEEL COLOR, NOT CHOSEN.

Did the same thing for the kids seat belts with mine. The passenger kid helps keep the car grounded. _________________

Casey you are the man I was just trying to be like you
I 100% stole the idea from seeing your setup at Flanders last fall. Somehow the idea stayed in the "VW Section" of my brain....which by the way is starting to take over. _________________ My '57 build:
