The other night I changed the bellows on my Fastback because it was ripped, the next day I was driving to work and the engine missed periodically.

On my way home the engine died completely, no weird noises just died. I could restart it but it would die while idleing.

I caught a ride home and the next day I tried firing it up before getting towed and it wouldn't start, then my friend towed me home.

When I got home I hooked up the auto starter to help me see if I was getting spark from the coil and it actually started up and idled great without dying. Before that I checked and I was getting 12 volts to the coil.

I removed the fuel sensor from the gas tank to see if there was anything floating around and didn't see anything, it needs to be cleaned though. The fuel filter is a few weeks old and looks clean.

I bought the car not running and had Empi HPMX 40's put on it to replace the single Weber that came on it. It ran great up until I changed the bellows.

What else should I check?

check the wires going to your generator. the other day I had a 'no start' issue and found, under a spark plug wire that my D+ wire had actually broken and was giving intermittent contact. Repaired the broken section and have not had an issue since.

I checked the generator wires, the connections were a little loose, tightened them up.

That wouldn't cause the engine to miss and die would it?

Check the fuses too, my ignition fuse blew is such a way it looked good until I hit a bump and then died. I wrapped in some foil from my pack of cigs and was able to get home.

Hey, I am new here and don't really know much about cars but I just wanted to throw this out here because it sounds very similar to problems I was having.

Mine died in a similar fashion (missing and then starting but would die during idle).

I recommend checking the distributor cap for cracks and check the points and make sure they have not burned up. You could also pull out your spark plugs and see what they look like.... and make sure the electrical wires are connected securely to your fuel injectors (if you have them)

Just 2cent from a newbie....

This is good advice, on a problem like this if were going to help you it's good to know you have already been through the basics.

so have you checked points and cap?

My wife's Fastback did this too (back when it was still carbed), and it turned out to be rust in the tank, clogging the sock. I drained, then pulled the tank out, and cleaned it up, and it was good until I did the FI swap. I only mention it, because right after it rolled off the rollback, I fired it up without any issues. That told me it was a fuel related problem. Very Happy

Also, you might want to check the overflow/vent hose on the filler neck for cracks. This will let water and dirt into the fuel tank, causing this very problem. Wink

Thanks for the suggestions! I won't have time to troubleshoot further until this weekend, but I'll post the results

I got my gas tank cleaned and sealed and put in a new filter. I cruised around today for a little bit and the engine didn't miss or die.

Thanks to everybody for the suggestions!

One more thing to check:
During warm weather sometimes the push rod which operates the fuel pump gets jammed inside the bakelite guide base block.
This happened 2 times to me and I searched for quite some time...
I think over time the bakelite gets soaked with oil and fuel.
Replace the bakelite guide and everything should be fine again Idea
