well at any VW event, "cruisin in my superbeetle" needs to be played,
also red hot chilli peppers. makes for good background music. any kind of reggae/ island music also makes for good background music. seems to put everyone in a good vibe. _________________ 1974 Super Beetle: Custom resto in progress

Have a couple playlists. One for the AC crowd, one for the Water crowd and a neural ground for mixed Water/AC or regular car shows. You have to keep it clean swear wise because there's always those people that think hearing "Ass" or "Bitch" will make there kids ears bleed . Point is you can't please everyone so just play a nice, PG mix at an acceptable volume. Just remember you're not at a concert, you're at a car show providing background/white noise _________________ '75 Hard Top Westfalia 2.0L F.I.

Can hear plenty of that wandering through the swap meet at Sacramento BOR... usually accompanied by the remnant odors of somebody's toke session the night before. |

I've organized a couple events and have had to deal with loud music. The people playing it love it, the people around them hate it.
Now I add 'No loud music' on the show rules sheet.
If you want music in your area, a small portable stereo at a moderate level please. _________________ Eric

It's fun to go for reaction while young, but eventually folks grow up and their sensibilities change. To me, music blasted with profanity has nothing to do with whether folks think the audience offended is a bunch of prudes, it's just classless and tacky. |

A VW crowd is a very broad spectrum of people and you'll never get a play list that won't annoy someone.
I'd be perfectly happy if a show had no music at all.

As others have said, extremely loud music as well as music from the late-50s and through the 1960s is annoying. I would like to add to that the idiot DJ (yo dog!) who tries to talk over the music to make an announcement, which comes out as an unintelligible muttering of gibberish because said DJ basically has his lips wrapped over the microphone. These clowns tend to have the speakers facing straight ahead of the booth/stand/mix-master area, thereby rendering anyone in the line of fire deaf, while those to either side merely catch nothing but faint buzzing noise that dissipates the further away they are from sound central. _________________ -

The 1960s were annoying? Is there anything you actually like, bitter boy? _________________ Give A Pal a Hand!

How 'bout a compromise? 10 minutes of annoying noise each hour, followed by peace and quiet and normal conversations.
Okay, maybe 5 minutes...
two minutes? |

One of the reasons I dont like going to one of our local shows is because it is probably 60% watercooled and the DJ plays to them. Rap, night club blare and non stop thumping are just aggrevating. _________________ John

Hello.
I think maybe I should comment here, as I am a DJ that plays / has played most of the VW shows in my area, as well as other car shows for about the last 15 or 16 years.
Over 20 years DJing total.
1. Speaker placement. Get those speakers up high over the heads of everyone. It's not so much how loud the music is, but that guys are putting their speakers too low, right in your face.
2. Bands are ALWAYS too loud at car shows. Never ever has this not been the case in my experience. Whether I was part of the show, or just a spectator. Speaker placement for them proves they don't have a professional sound guy.
3. Good quality music. Quit it with the ipods guys. Get high quality source material, and use high quality gear. Peavey, Behringer, Radio Shack, etc are CRAP and sound like it.
4. Variety. I mostly play on the deeper side of house, but years of mobile DJing has left me with pretty much every style of music from the earliest known recordings all the way up to current day stuff. I am extremely musically versatile. If you can't play multiple genres, get a second DJ who can. No matter what genre, play music that has pleasing sounds, was recorded well, and steers clear of foul language. Stay away from music extremes. Hard core anything doesn't work here.
5. Unless it's time for announcements, stay off the mic! No one wants to listen to you. No one can hear you. So shut up. Let the music play, at a comfortable volume. Turn off the music, and the volume up when it is time for you to speak.
6. EQ. Use it well. Roll off some of that top end so it isn't hurting people's ears. Make it sound warm.
Hope some of that helps... Good Luck! _________________ (o\ ! /o)

EXCATLY. i hate it when you go to an event, and the only thing you hear is a bad echo, and shitty quality speakers. its not about the loud, its about the quality. if you don't have high quality, AND know how to properly use and fine tune it, just forget about it. i'd prefer nothing, over shitty quality. _________________ 1974 Super Beetle: Custom resto in progress

Even as a DJ i can relate to Dave, specialy when u have 3 arena's blasting techno and it all bleeds together, they will have portable wave cancelling screens available soon that u can use to cancel the sound..sort of an 'anti sound system!' | djkeev wrote: | I won't pretend that I know the why of it but it seems that "events" for some reason MUST HAVE MUSIC.
Why?
All through the 50's and 60's and well into the 70's when you had a picnic, you went outside, you heard the birds, you listened to the wind rustle the leaves on the trees, the creek babbled and gurgled over the rocks nearby.
Today? It seems that the youth of America, teens, 20's and even the 30 somethings MUST HAVE MUSIC!!
Hiking in the woods, they must have ear buds in blasting some sort of music. Whatever the activity it seems that music is a must have. It is in car shows for sure. Used to be a band would come and play or an oldies group would give some atmosphere but not the canned crap blasting so loud you can't talk.
Anyway, that's my rant on music at any event, I think if an Air Cooled VW show feels it must have music, it should be golden oldies reflecting the era in which the car sold and thrived.
Sorry, I'm not a fan of your chosen occupation, I agree with Doc, DJ events are most often just annoying and loud. Just turn it off and let us hear the world around us and the music it creates on its own.
If you want music, turn on the radio in your car, if you want outside music go to a concert somewhere.
I'm old, I admit it. We've (the wife and I) got tickets to James Taylor at the Garden State Arts Center (PNC) for June of this year. That's music, real people singing real songs. We've been going to his concerts since he and Carly Simon were a pair and before those days!
