Another story from my 80's VW adventures.
It was a clear summer Friday night around circa 1985-86. That week I just swapped engines in my 1967 Black KG Vert. I took out my 48IDA motor to retorque and freshen it up. I put in our "company" (all the VW heads that I hung out with) stock 1600 dual port engine that we all used when needed. So that night I get a page (remember pagers!!) from some chick I had meet a couple of weeks before cruising Whittier blvd. Now this girl was hot but a little on the cholia side but nevertheless I picked her up and a couple of her friends that night to go up to "flat top" in Lincoln Heights. I was my in my Ghia, my homie Oscar (RIP) in his pink primered 15 Window and homie Carlos in his light grey 66 Vert. so we pick up these chicks that lived near Romona Gardens projects in ELA. We head out and start going up Soto and at the 10frwy crossing we are all waiting at the light and this beater Regal in the next lane over throws a drink on my ghia (remember I have 2 chicks in my car that look a little chola) and these knuckle heads looked like bangers. So my homie Oscar and around 4 other heads were behind the regal in his bus. Oscar & the 2 fools in the Regal start exchanging verbal threats. So we all start moving and drive over to the Gas station (if you know the area you know what station) and Oscar, Carlos & these punks start going at it.....Oscar mops the floor with the passengar and the driver is going at it with one if the Guys in Oscar's bus. So me and the girls parked away from the drama as to not get my Ghia smashed up. So guess what happens next!!! the 2 punks are beat down and they jump back in their Regal and take off out of the gas station parking lot........and guess what car they decide to clip.......the fool slammed the corner of my ghia. We were all pumped up, took all the VW's back to H.P. and jumped in one of the guys low profile 4 door 70's nova and headed back to look for these punks........
............To Be Continued!! stay tuned!! _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

.............Continued from above story.....
So we head out to the neighborhood we thought we would see these guys that clipped my Ghia Vert (young & dumb back then).....now this varrio is Hazard & if you know LA its not so "safe" a place to be at night. So we are about to give up & head back to our "hood" when we are going back down Soto and see the beater Regal parked on the street in front of Hazard park behind the County General Hospital (the leading hospital were Military Dr.s train to treat gunshot wounds......wonder why??) So we pass & park at the mini-mart over the hill right before the 10frwy bridge......Were thinking that maybe they ran out of gas or they knew that we would come back & set up a bait for us....now at night Hazard park is very dark and full of trees (2nd dumb mistake for us)......Anyway our young dumb minds decide to go hit them up......we drive back, park across the street & we see only 2 guys...we approach and out of nowhere a vato from behind a tree comes out with a sawed-off shotgun and before we could react "blasted" our way in the dark a flash of light .....good thing it was probably a 20gauge with small pellets and he was a good distance from us & none of us got hit....We of course retreated to our ride and called it a day.......But I will never forget that day of fun/madness!! As I look back today It amazes me that I'm still here writing about it today. _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

Thanks J8Bug...........I had VWKIDD2 plates also but as part of the sale to Japan they stayed with my 1967 Karmann Ghia Vert......So all you Japan Sambanistas if you are reading this I want to buy back my blue Cali VWKIDD2 plates or better yet my Black/Black Haartz top 67 Ghia Vert with heart 6" Fuchs all around, Beige Scotch interior (all the rage back in the 80's) with Porsche 911 speedo, 914 clock, gas gauge in the original dash holes and drilled porsche 914 rear discs, front ghia discs drilled Porsche pattern..........So if you know who has this car arrived in Japan circa 86-87 I want to buy it back!!! I will know my car because all my rides from back then had my initials engraved hidden somewhere and only I know where & what it was. _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

From my perspective It seemed surreal walking into a mechanic shop in Silverlake Cali in the mid 90s and seeing BadTemper2 pictures on the wall yet there was no trace whatsoever of the 80s scene in L.A.... That scene that was so huuuge and the cars were so badass and memorable and had nothing to do with the Callook or graphics, scallops, altered dashboards or carshow fads of that time that HotVWs was promoting. I personally felt as if I must have lived a dreamed that didnt exist. But in talking to CRG, VWKIDD and a few others I wasnt the only one that felt that way.. But I got to say the guys that have come after us that didnt get caught up in the fads of the moment have taken the game to a whole nother level. Im always impressed at the high level of detail of the builds by the younger generations. GOOD JOB!!! _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. I'll be brutally honest, that's the type of story that makes me glad I didn't grow up in L.A. or Southern California ... but even more brutally honest, I'm very grateful that all you guys lived to tell these stories today! |

Former SGV resident checking in (El Monte to be exact). I was a young pup back then born in 78....but grew up on lowriders (Dad is a former member of Imperials), then he moved on to Vw's & more Chevy's. The car "bug" hit me & my brothers too. My dad had a nice 70 Ghia when I was a young pup rolling a big motor & gold empi 8 spokes, along with some more vw's. He was a parts warehouse manager in La (Hadero Auto Parts). My older bro had a nice 64 square slammed on 2.0 liters and a few other bugs too.
I remember watching Vw's race up & down Parkway Drive. One Vw I remember especially was a nice 21 or 23 window bus that had the 2 block heads (Gumby cartoon) painted on it. I think it said Double Trouble on it. Seen quite a few bugs get rolled coming around a few turns on that road too.
Also loved cruising out to Legg Lake on Sunday afternoons & also hitting Frisco Burgers on Wednesday nights.
Thanks for bringing back good memories. I'll post some old pics when I find them. _________________ 1967 Cal-Look Bug
