|
|
Does anyone know of a decent place in the DC area for getting my "Turkis" painted? I don't really want to take it to a "production line" paint shop, rather it be someone that wants to do a good job on an old car, and wants it to be right.
If i had a bigger garage i would get a setup going and do it there using an off the clock painter, but i just don't have the space and it needs to be done at a shop.
I've put an ad on the local Craigslist, but there's no telling what kind of responses I'm going to get!
Also, what are some ballpark figures for the job? The car is rust free and straight. I have removed all of the interior, glass and trim. Engine will also be coming out for rebuild, so the only prep work is going to be rubbing the old paint down.
Thanks |

So I've had a few responses, only 2 of which are actual pro body shops with the correct facilities.
I've managed to get a couple of good prices i think....not knowing about paint I'm not sure though. Reading Mikes post i'm thinking they must be bargains.
One is a restoration shop. I'll gut the car (already done) and take him the shell. He'll paint it with 2 coats of primer, 3 of paint, 1 clear coat, bake and then final buff - $2400. He supplies the paint.
Second one is the painter for a local body shop that can do work on the side and his boss lets him rent the bay's and oven. He's saying 2 coats of primer, 5-6 coats of paint, 3 clear, bake and then final polish - $2000
I'm happy with those prices if I'm honest. What questions should i be asking besides shop reputation? Brand of paint? |

dude the paint and materials alone will be an easy 1k...so his labor to strip the car to the og metal and not leave stock, crap OG paint is only $1000?....so he gets what? 10 bucks an hour?...there isn't a body shop in the country who gets a complete overall done in a couple of days...4 days maybe....god bless 'em.
that's 20 hrs at $40 personal rate...$800? give or take?
get yourself some references, proof or work done and all for mentioned material costs and proof of all labor.
how many have we heard about saying $2400 then end up paying 5k?
..too many to count .
and for god sake, get a freakin contract btw too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ WWW.401RESTOS.COM

Yes, I am very aware of that. I've been in the auto trade for many years and seen it more times than i care to remember for repairs. I have made that clear to both parties, and a contract will definitely be part of the deal. |

And the estimated cost.
It never reflects the real deal end result...never.
I can bet they will uncover some area or toss some other hrs in that weren't accounted for..if so make sure they are counted, picked and recorded.
Either way it's a smoking deal and you better jump on it. _________________ WWW.401RESTOS.COM

trying to hire a bodyman or a painter is a real crapshoot unless youve got proof of the quality of work youre going to get.
You can still get lucky and find painters who will give you a good paintjob at a bargain, but more likely not, and you'll get what you pay for.
But WTH. Give it a shot if your feeling is good about the deal. |

Skills (among others) hit the nail on the head. I'm a painter that's taken side work for years. Not anymore though. My time is more valuable than a low-buck paintjob. Other/ younger painters are still out there, keep looking.
You'll find someone out there, there are a lot of hungry painters these days. Anyhow, I'm glad I live on the west coast with this one... Not a good ending for sure. _________________ The best things in life aren't Things

yeah i agree with all you guys aswell.
...just go and get your ducks in a row, research the shops and nothing for nothing be honest of what your REALLY looking for.
i just gave 3 estimates on everything from a 65 bus to a 95 gti and all of em were expecting Foose paint on a thousand dollar budget.
after explaining the cost of materials, labor and of course body work, they came around and got a better idea of what they were really putting thier money into and where it ends up. _________________ WWW.401RESTOS.COM

The $2400 guy says he is only gonna spray 1 coat of clear! That won't 'end well' I don't think. That alone would steer me towards $2000 guy. _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

Absolutely jump on it. That's 1 hell of a smoking deal.
Hell I've got well over 1600 in just paint and primer (not body work, as that's a seperate deal) in my 64 T-34. Granted, I probably used the best/most expensive materials you can buy, but I don't want to have to redo any of it again for a very long time.
But I do have to agree with Skills, I really don't think you're going to get what you're after. At least not without paying more. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

A little bit of a hijack, but got a 78 Westy coming out of the body shop (just the metal work being done) and will be looking for a "decent" paint job too. Since we're in the same area, please keep us informed throughout this process. Personally, I'm wishing you well and am anxious to see how it turns out.
For the professionals out there. Your points are very well made and I agree 100%, but also keep in mind that many of us are not looking for show cars, rather a decent paint job that will preserve whats underneath (i.e. the metal) and sport a cleaner look. $2400 for a hobby car or daily driver from a hungry moonlighter seems reasonable, especially since all the labor intensive components have already been removed (glass, trim, engine, handles, etc....). OP, wish you well and toss us some before and after pictures and a post job summary. Thanks _________________ David W - from Chesterfield, VA / Jefferson SD / Stephens City, VA in that order.

..and not all pro's wanna do trailer queen show cars...but we still need to get paid for all of the hidden garbage uncovered from so many "driiver" paint jobs.
every vw i have painted or restored have been so badly molested and "made pretty" it's sad.
all of the cars i have done are driven daily///all of them. suree they may not roll around in the snow but they see 7-9 months of the year...and they are done to the "factory" look with a little extra love....trailer queens are for the guys who have to much money to spend.
and those guys are into hot rods, muscle cars and concours crap..no vw hobbiest...they are ALWAYS looking for the cheapest and quickest way out...some more than others.
and with todays economy,i can't say as i blame 'em!!!! _________________ WWW.401RESTOS.COM

Came back to check for updates. Nothing yet, but will toss out a bone. Schell, I checked out your site as well as all your photos here. You do awesome work, wish you were a bit closer. Got a 78 that needs your love, but the towing would kill me. On your next trip through VA, bring a dolley, tow bar or trailer and take her back with you. ....shameless bump for thread, hoping for an update. _________________ David W - from Chesterfield, VA / Jefferson SD / Stephens City, VA in that order.
