I am trying to find the correct shifter for an early 55, US delivered semaphore car. I got one that I thought was correct but it was a little bit shorter than the one in my 53 oval. Also my 53 has a short shifter mounting base and the one I got for the 55 came with a tall base. I am starting to think I got a split bug shifter.

Would this be correct for straight shifters?

Split bug- tall base shorter shifter length, total shifter length 32.4 cm
Oval bug -short base slightly longer shifter

thanks for any help

Pre '52 shifters have a small diameter ball at the end which measures roughly 15.7mm

1953-55 shifters have a larger 21.5mm diameter ball on it's end

A Split era shifter won't work properly in your '55 unless a you, or a previous owner, replaced the original shift rod with a Pre '52 shift rod inside the center tunnel.

As for the shifter base dilemma, Yes Pre '52 shifters use a much taller base. 1953-laters Type 1s use a shorter version. Because of this difference, the earlier shifters (with a 15.7mm ball) has the fulcrum pivot placed up higher on the shifter.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking, I got a split shifter. Anyone want to trade a split shifter for a straight oval shifter?
