Is there a clear gel on top of that test panel Vince? Will you add one or see how it buffs out to get the orange peel out? I'd be concerned about cutting into the flake, even though it's suspended in the gelcoat. _________________ www.nationalsterling.org

Thanks! I am sure with your experience you could spray gel coat. Just do a few tests before you do the real shoot. You can thin it with styrene so that it is high build primer consistency.
Actually Bruce (or someone at Meyers Manx) picked the color (20E emerald green) back in 1968. Rick asked me to bring it back to the original flake color. I got the flake from Meadowbrook Inventions which is where Bruce got the original flake from.
The minimum order was 10 lbs, so I will have over 9 lbs left. So if anyone needs any PM me.
kellison
Thanks!
Rick
I put down the base coat of (un-waxed) Hunter Green gel coat thinned with styrene. I then put down a few layers of thinned (un-waxed) clear gel coat with the flake in it. (I did not do it dry like I was going to, it gave it more depth mixed with the clear) I then put on a heavy coat of clear (un-waxed) gel coat. Then a coat of PVA so the clear would cure non-tacky. I then washed the PVA off with water and sanded the clear with 400 grit. (carefully) I then sprayed the top coat with clear gel coat mixed with Duratec high gloss additive. I know that I have plenty of clear to color sand. It is kind of a pain but will be very durable and have some depth to it.

Update 3/14
Finally got a good weather window to shoot the flake.
Here are some pictures:
I did the pods and the hood today and will do the body tomorrow.
There is a bunch of "orange peel" on the gel coat which is normal for this part of the process. I will sand it down and shoot a top coat on it after it cures.

Nice! With the SR molds you can now try the process in reverse - clear first, then your flake and "bottom" coat. And no more orange peel! _________________ www.nationalsterling.org

Question about the fiberglass repair:
When you did small holes (like areas where there were just a few screw holes), did you do a full-on fiberglass repair, or did you just use a filler.
I have a whole bunch of screw holes in the back seat area that will need to be filled in. |

My goodness Man.... HOW old are you????
Kids today don't know what a half-Dollar is... you may need to convert it to modern currency or another unit of measure...

Ha Ha! Thought the same thing when I read it.
I was wondering if some "younger person" was thinking about 2 inches by 3 inches (half a paper dollar size). _________________ The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Rick
I had though about trying that. I will when I get some time between projects. I want to see how glossy it is out of the mold.
Nick
Jeff (jspbtown) is correct I will feather it out to "half-dollar" size if there is damage and cracking. If not I use a "burr" to grind out the gel coat and glass. (about "dime" size (still in use) )
Bryan
I remember half dollars, in fact I have a collection that is still at my parent's house. Mind you I did turn 50 last wed, but I am not a "grandpa" yet.
Joe
Never know what they are teaching in school these days.
Update 3/15
Shot the body today.
Started with base coat of Hunter Green gel coat.
Then shot the flake.
Definitely lightens and brightens it up.
"Action and Drama"
As a side note I am definitely ready for St Patrick's Day. I am tinted green from over spray and I have flake on me that gives a little sparkle. I am too tall to be a Leprechaun though.

Great Job Vince!
I'll (Hopefully) be doing the repair we talked about on the phone the other day... That is if I'm not playing Taxi driver for my teenaged daughters. _________________ ~X-Man~

Thanks!! Let me know how it works out and call me if you have any questions.
Update 3/16
Here is the body out in the sun.
It looks a bit dull due to the "orange peel" of the gel coat but once it is sanded, top coated (gel coat) and polished it will really sparkle.

| Beautiful. I'm not worthy. I couldnt see restoring my Rascal to it's original glorious green metalflake gelcoat after all the repair/modification work I did on my buggy, but seeing those pictures makes me wish I did. |

Vince, Absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to see the body after sanding and gloss top coat of gel. Wish I was as proficient with the chassis as you are with the body. Great job - hope the weather holds so you can carry on to finish. |

Vince,
Quality work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep, I've been watching this one.
I do have a question for you. I stopped by the body shop this week, and the rear (box part) of the Barris, has a lot of pin holes. Is it acceptale to use spot putty on these?
Oh, and I just used mothers polish, and my die grinder on the gas cap.
Thanks,

Steve
Thanks! How are your repairs going?
Wythac
Thanks, I still have 8lbs of flake left if you want some.
Rick
Thanks I hope to get it to you soon, you are not that far off with your chassis.
Bill
Thanks, sorry for the delay in replying. You can use putty to fill the pin holes. Glad the filler cap will work out for you. Looking forward to seeing your Barrist some day soon.
Brian
Thanks, it will be a little longer. Sanding is my favorite thing.
Tom
Thanks, your build is moving right along, I think I will come up to Carlisle just to see it.
Murzi
Thanks, you need to bring that Baja up here some time for some beach cruising.
Update 3/22
I have found that if you use a dark base color you need to really pile on the flake. My blue buggy's base color matched the flake and it did not need a whole lot of flake to cover. I have reshot the flake and put another few layers on to get better coverage. It also gave it awesome depth and "sparkle". So it will take a bit longer than I thought but it will be worth it!

Coverage is relative. Matching the flake to the base you'll have less chances of seeing the holes between flakes. A lighter base color will tend to wash out flake; black base deepens the final color. As you've found you'll need more to get full coverage, but I think the final look is far better. _________________ www.nationalsterling.org

Vince,
Can you share some information on spraying the gel coat? Do you use a HVLP system? Pot or gravity feed? What size flakes do you use? What size tips do you use for the gel coat and the gel coat/flakes? Is there anything special about the gel coat, like waxed and un-waxed like in the resins? Would you have to use a additive in the last coat of clear to help cure?
Do you think it is a better option to use gel coat as a finish as opposed to using paint? |
