Schwing comments in his "Herman moves to MD" build thread that according to progressive refinements hubcap centers were all painted black beginning on 9/4/56. PR notes that prior to that date they were painted various colors. I have seen hubcaps on earlier cars painted either the color of the inner rim or body color. I looked through the archives, various web seraches, but found no documentation as to what color the hubcap center should be for a given body color. Just wondering if anybody has any documentation on this.

Garwood lists hubcap center colors in his books (matches body color '54 - April '56). However, given the number of errors in his oval window-era color charts, I wouldn't count on them to be 100 percent accurate.

I do know that Strato Silver cars had hubcaps with Strato Silver centers. I still have 1 (very rusty) of 3 color-matching hubcaps from a Feb '55 L227 ragtop that were taken off the car in 1970.

janerick3,

Thanks for responding. I’ve known that ovals originally had painted emblems, with earlier ovals having the emblem (mostly) painted corresponding the body.

From progressive refinements body section page A-51: Sept. 4, 56 ornamental wheel caps bug/transporter Now: VW emblem in black only Before: various colours

AS you note Garwood is incorrect in that he indicates this change in the late 56 MODEL Year rather than the late 56 CALANDER Year which was early 57 production year. My question was with “various”. However, I’ve always been curious because of seeing a few L275 light beige cars with red emblems. According to Garwood (inaccuracies duly noted) it appears that VW painted the inner rim of light colored cars (light beige, parchment white) a darker color and the hubcap VW emblem was painted the inner rim color rather than the body color. It’s just a small little detail, but the hubcap looks rather naked without it. Since I hadn’t popped them on since mounting my summer rims, figured just do it. Done in beige which is what I figured.

Below are some photos of various emblems with the poster ID'd from the gallery

Beige rims(piet&som) I post this as always curious about this rim combo

How to (margaritavillian)
I didn't find much luck with the rattle can and wipe method but I did using Elmer's (glue) brand 'Painters' paint pens found at the local craft store. I outlined the emblems in fine point and filled in the middles with a medium point.

Schwing in his thread describes how he did his and I recall discussion on HOW TO in the split window beetle forum.

More about this, please? I have a lot of trouble keeping my whitewalls clean and have never heard of this product.

I cannot recall who (or where read) turned me on to them. The problem with whitewall cleaners is that the chemicals contained in them will prematurely degrade your whitewall, either via yellowing, or cracking + you are likely using some type of brush to scrub. No offensive intended to the previous poster but SOS pads will likely put swirl marks prematurely in the whitewall as well. Although she didn't mention it for whitewalls, my wife has used the MR Clean Majic erase for years on her store's floors to clean heel marks-no scratches. Your whitewalls will eventually develop fine cracks IF not kept in climate control, but given the cost of a new set, no need to have them crack/yellow prematurely if you can help it. Thinking about it, I bet the old white drafting eraser would proably wortk as well, but I haven't use one in over 20 years. Just get a Mr Clean and you can clean your whitewalls anytime, without having to wash your car/wet your tires. Go to a show, pull it of your glove box, perfectly clean white walls.

Bonus fun fact, everything purchased a Walgreens bypasses the car hobby budget and goes straight to the household budget!

My free hand is bad, but I don't care much. This was rustolium thinned down a bit. It dried better.

Hey, you've got 20 foot hubcap emblems just like me! Had trouble photographing last night as the lighting was so bad, the flash was washing out the beige. Paint was too thick & dried a bit blotchy, but they look OK on the car. Also you don't need to use much pressure with the Mr Clean unless you have a really troublesome spot.

My wife isn't going to see these until I try them out first. And if they work well, my wife isn't ever going to see them! Laughing

The magic erasers are great. We use them on our vert top and all the interior. Wife uses them on walls and everywhere. They do work very well.

Holy Mackerel! These Magic Erasers are awesome! I used them on my whitewalls and on my mud flaps and the dirt came off like nothing. Much better than the smelly whitewall cleaner that comes with all kinds of warnings about getting it on the paint. Only problem is that after four whitewalls and two mudflaps the eraser started to fall apart. No matter, it still works great.

Here is a little secret to painting the hubcap logos.

read my earlier post with margaritavillian's how to. He couldn't get it right, I tried, I couldn't either (years ago) which is why I finally did it by hand. However, it does look REAL nice when done right.

Thats how I did mine also, an old ford buddy of mine tought me that trick. Its how he paints up his 30's ford caps. I painted mine over 10 years ago and they are still holding up nicely.
