Vw Kid, I remember that Hood ,the Hazzard projects and that whole area. I worked at The Broadway Department Stores Ware House On Mission in Lincoln Heights.. Do you guys remember Lincoln park The Cinco de Mayo concerts.. Those events were crazy.. I remember the last event held their in the mid eighties There was a big riot. I've never seen so many home boys from different hoods that day.. It seemed like the movie the Warriors when all the gangs met at that park for a peace treaty.Well all those Homies at Lincoln Park were waiting for trouble ,and it didnt take more then a couple of hours when the Cinco de Mayo festivities began the homies started a riot, the cops got in their cars and left , some cops were beating homies like pinatas. Me and my buddies were leaving and got stuck on Mission Road in my 67 Vw, a big traffic jam, bumper to bumper, And all of a sudden these homies in a beat up 67 Impalla in front of us opened their trunk and brought a Gauge and started blasting away at these other homies across the street, I thought I was in some kind movie,I didnt seem real!! Man that shit was crazy.. I punched my 67 with a 1641 and and hit a car,I jacked up my fender and my front bumper, I just got the fuck out of that place. Vw Kid, that whole area was crazy man, I meant the Neighborhood.I've seen alot of crazy shit in those days The Eighties....

The mid-80s Uncle Jams Army concerts at the Sports Arena would also end up in riots (blacks vs mexicans) that would spill into the neighborhoods surrounding USC... A few times I felt like I wasnt going to get out of there alive. But come next year, I was there and the result was no different, riots... Boy was I glad when I turned 21 and started going to 21 and over clubs on a regular basis...

Former SGV resident checking in (El Monte to be exact). I was a young pup back then born in 78....but grew up on lowriders (Dad is a former member of Imperials), then he moved on to Vw's & more Chevy's. The car "bug" hit me & my brothers too. My dad had a nice 70 Ghia when I was a young pup rolling a big motor & gold empi 8 spokes, along with some more vw's. He was a parts warehouse manager in La (Hadero Auto Parts). My older bro had a nice 64 square slammed on 2.0 liters and a few other bugs too.

I remember watching Vw's race up & down Parkway Drive. One Vw I remember especially was a nice 21 or 23 window bus that had the 2 block heads (Gumby cartoon) painted on it. I think it said Double Trouble on it. Seen quite a few bugs get rolled coming around a few turns on that road too.

Also loved cruising out to Legg Lake on Sunday afternoons & also hitting Frisco Burgers on Wednesday nights.

Thanks for bringing back good memories. I'll post some old pics when I find them.

One of my favorites to come out of El Monte. I love it when you can find guys you just leave your shit and go and know that its in good hands.

.............Continued from above story.....
So we head out to the neighborhood we thought we would see these guys that clipped my Ghia Vert (young & dumb back then).....now this varrio is Hazard & if you know LA its not so "safe" a place to be at night. So we are about to give up & head back to our "hood" when we are going back down Soto and see the beater Regal parked on the street in front of Hazard park behind the County General Hospital (the leading hospital were Military Dr.s train to treat gunshot wounds......wonder why??) So we pass & park at the mini-mart over the hill right before the 10frwy bridge......Were thinking that maybe they ran out of gas or they knew that we would come back & set up a bait for us....now at night Hazard park is very dark and full of trees (2nd dumb mistake for us)......Anyway our young dumb minds decide to go hit them up......we drive back, park across the street & we see only 2 guys...we approach and out of nowhere a vato from behind a tree comes out with a sawed-off shotgun and before we could react "blasted" our way in the dark a flash of light .....good thing it was probably a 20gauge with small pellets and he was a good distance from us & none of us got hit....We of course retreated to our ride and called it a day.......But I will never forget that day of fun/madness!! As I look back today It amazes me that I'm still here writing about it today.

That same hood is where I found my stolen/stripped squareback back in 1986.

San Fernando Valley in the house!!! Welcome to our thread.............Hey Derluftwagen there was a grey ragtop from the Valley that I was told at the time was one of the fastest in the Valley. Do you know what VW I'm talking about.
So one night at Elysian park I was there in my streetrace red primered 63 hardtop beater with my full race drivetrain....the only tip off that my bug was all business was the 4 1/2 centerlines with M & H frontrunners and the rear 7" centerlines with studded & forged lugnuts with Hoosier cheater slicks. So this grey ragtop revs me hard passing my buddy Jaime & me sitting in my bug parked on Stadium way. I was itching for some race action. So we jump in my vw and roll up to were a bunch of guys & girls kicking it with other clean VW's and the grey ragtop. We hit them up if they want to run & they accepted so we all drove tho Riverside dr where the 1/4 mile was marked off......you guys that raced will remember where it started and kinda veered slightly left where the finish mark was. So we get there and he wants to see my motor......of course I said NO! and tell him I will let him run without a fan belt to ease his mind that I might have an unfair advantage of some sort. So we line up off of his move.....................We both launched hard and as soon as he shifted to second he misshifted and hurt his engine, obviously kissing an exhaust valve in the process and lost power........I let off once I realized he hurt his engine and cruised to the win...........After I turned around and went back to pick up my buddy and was talking to the guy who was a little bit shook up after damaging his engine. he was telling me that we should rematch after he repairs his car & that he couldn't believe he did that & that he was one of the fastest VW'in the Valley...........Anyway did you know of this car or guy........never got his name but I did see him later that night at Tommies burgers in another VW, and we were cool talking & he was trying to get me to open my decklid so he could see what I was running.

If he noticed something in my car that needed attention he would just take care of it right then and there and not think much of it. Just recently I was having some tranny problems and I pulled up my back seat to see if my shifter rod might be coming loose at the coupler and I saw it had been wired up. He always did stuff like that and in this case I didnt even know about it till just last month. He knew I was street racing quite often because my car was constantly at his shop getting it ready for the next race and quite often he always did something extra for free that he thought would give me that little extra advantage. Just this weekend I was talking to a kid who had a very similar set-up to my old school set-up and in talking to him it was obvious he was underachieving with that set-up. So i gave him a bunch of tips & tricks to steer him in the right direction. Hector had given them to me for free so I gave them to someone else for free.

The gray euro rag in the pics above was pretty fast at the time. It was originally owned by Art who ran a high compression 1914 that would spank a lot of wannabes, he then sold it to Sal and Rigo and kept the engine and put it into his yellow oval with fiberglass front end.

The first generation has some even faster cars. Arts yellow oval was originally a white all out drag car called the "ghost". I forget the name of the original owner but it was all gutted, fiberglass fenders/front end, aluminum beam/tank, slicks and plexiglass windows. It had a 2276 (huge at the time) 11:1 compression, IDAs and would carry the front end with ease. I was told that the ghost was the fastest in the valley at the time (mid 80s) but back then it seemed that anyone with a 2 liter was "the fastest".

After slamming the rear, the S&S merge duals wouldnt last that long! It was a sight to see, when the rear dumped racing on Laurel Canyon the sparks would fly!

You said it!! That 15 window cost me $300, the oval $40 and Martys vert was $800! Wish those prices were the same today.

The few times some of the club members went down to LA but they would come back with bullet holes in their rides so.....lets just say they would take their other rides to 'hook up'.

We would cruise Hollywood sometimes but there was always someone breaking down or getting into an accident. One time a freshly painted oval on its maiden voyage rear ended another bug in the club looking at some chicks! WHAT A DRAG!!

Repair of the wounded car.

Driving after a few 40s was the usual back then, glad we survived those days!

I believe that! One time we picked up these girls from the projects I forget what area it was but for those of you who been in and around those things you had to drive directly into them and would get stared down from the locals wondering who you were and hope to god nobody hit you up. Especially driving a lowered vw.

Valley Brake & Wheel..I have heard nothing but good things about Hector & how a stand up guy he was. (RIP)......like J8bug had Hector, I had Steve Tims who always had time to talk to this kid about what made a VW fast.....Thats the way it should be, share the wealth of knowledge.......especially nowadays in the aircooled scene....I might not know everything about these cars but what I do know I'm willing to share with the next generations.

The yellow oval usually ran cookie cutters 6s and 7s but he traded with his brother to see what it would look like with centerlines. Looked better with cookies IMO.

A few weeks later he sold the oval to another club member and picked up another euro rag for $250. I bought the hearts and cookies for the vert and got lucky at pomona and also picked up a complete oval vert deck lid for $300.
