OK... before I discovered this board, I bought a set of 042's from MOFOCO. I have since read all the bad things stated about them on posts here on the forum.

But here is my question... are the casting themselve junk?

If I were to run them for awhile as is, and then eventually take them to a reputable head guy for port/polish/valves/springs/etc.... are they saveable or did I just get hosed?

These are brand new, not yet run by the way.

Thanks for your honest input!

MOFOCO has been suffering from some quality issues. If you think the heads are okay then run 'em. If you are second guessing them then take them to a good machine shop and have them inspect them for any obvious flaws and see what they say.

A friend of mine just bought a set too. I tried to talk him out of it, but he did anyway because they are within driving distance from him. Sad

If you don't think they are what you want and they are still brand new, I would list them on eBay and sell them and then buy exactly what you want. You'll spend less money in the long run. Always buy what you want the first time. Some people will not port/polish a used head.

The castings themselfs are the problem... Get you're money back if you can.

Go get a set of C.B. 044's... Even with these, I replace the valves, retainers, and do about 30+ hours worth of work to before they are ready... and this is without any special port-work.

Definately not ready out-of the-box.

did you say Mofukyo heads?

They are kind of soft. You will see it when you are boring or flycutting them on the mill. The chips are dull and has that low note cutting sound on them. Do not worry.. I use high grade C2 carbides to cut them with 1/32 radius and chip clearance built in the toolbit.

These just do not cut as good as the Brazilian heads or Mexican heads. The German ones...have that high pitched and hard cutting aluminum sound. The chips are nicely formed too.

Don't mind me..just babbling.

I know it does not take me 30 hours to flycut/bore and 3 angle valve job a set of heads...more like 2 hours. But I charge for 30 hours. JUST KIDDING AGAIN! People might think all machinists are rip offs.

Hey it is almost Christmas fellows. Let us be nice to everyone and pick up after the New Year.

regards. NSR.

The Mofoco heads have worse problems than just the sound they make when you machine them... Rolling Eyes

It takes about + / - 15 hrs per head for the C.B. 044's

Ever take a look at what you get out-of-the-box?

The valve seats have steps that are about 1/16" - 1/8" surrounding each seat... the area near the plug has an almost verticle wall Shocked

The combustion chambers are huge... good for a non-quench motor.

The core shift is pretty extreme on the ports.. the valve-job needs to go gone-over.

Yes about 30 hrs for a Professional to do the work... Less time for a

Hi Joe..

I should have said I would rather work with Brazilian heads...if I can help it. Big valves and all-out.

Of course the Brazilians are NOT CB Eliminators or Super Flos, but for the most part are nice to start a nice super street heads.

Maybe you can still get your money back with return and receipt in hand. They are still NEW, right? The company should be able to take their items back. If NOT? then that should tell you something.

with the cylinder heads and the net effect on the engine/life of the cylinder heads? Do you have any of the heads where this problem has occured during the life on an engine? These are not designed to be race quality cylinder heads. They are built for the street.

I had them ship me a set of 041's for my 1800 cc. fresh top end, these heads performed very well! I even changed my dual Kadron's to a single 34-3 and man they still flowed great! nice heads! No problem. I was very satisfied with Mofoco's service and price. I would buy again and highly recommend them!

in the second photo from the top are those holes where the liner would rest, seems like they broke through to the fins when they machined these heads.

Yeah, those fin holes don't matter, since the compression "sealing" is all at the cylinder-to-head surface.

This is a very old post that got dredged up from the depths...

For those that don't know, MOFOCO has come a long way in the QC department since this thread started. It's not even fair to compare, Roy has turned the place around completely. I've ordered from them several times, and will again in the future. Also, they have reworked the head castings (still made in USA).

doesn't matter, that area isn't used for sealing. you should know this already. you've got a porsche logo in your avatar. 3.0 liter (and larger) air cooled porsche 911 cylinder heads are like that from the factory.
