Excellent work, Antonio
I'll have to go look at my "Notek" light and see if it has the "VDO" stamping under the paint

We do appreciate it. I am pleased to see a restoration of such quality. After all, these jobs are rare here in Portugal. It takes courage to make such a restoration. Should have more research work than work metal. Good luck ...

Great work. Excellent but ...
It will be to nice for a war-time vehicle ... Like the way you make it, it will be a showroom model brand new and high level finish.
Just kidding. Well done.

Donīt get me wrong, I disagree with some others here. Youīre using 90 percent repro sheetmetal, whereīs the original tin ??
Do you have the original frame tunnel ? Or is it postwar beetle ?
So itīs only the main frame, which is original ? Can you still read the body number ? Itīs on the drivers side near the B-pillar.
Itīs too bad many people donīt preserve wartime vehicles accurately.
just my two cents. |

flip thru the photo album link at the beginning of the build. the kubel was a total basket case and thrown together with different pieces over the years. as a result he went with new sheet metal to get it correct.
and if you think that the new czech metal just lines right up and goes right on you're greatly mistaken. there isn't a panel that goes on without a ton of tweaking beforehand....and from the pics it looks like these guys did the work to get everything to line up correctly like it should.

from the pics it appears to be post war beetle. it's missing the mounting tabs with T nuts for the front and rear skid pans.

they've got a pic of it in that photo album on the first page.

what makes you say this? that's a pretty broad statement without much to back it up.
*edit*
i do have my own opinions in the matter, but choose not to voice them as this isn't my build. |

well, itīs a forum, so I believe itīs allowed to have different opinions.
The title of this thread says 1944 kubelwagen, so I assumed itīs original, my bad.
I didnīt want to offense anybody here, if so, Iīm sorry.
Of course itīs "easier" for some people to use repro stuff instead of
saving the old tin, because it requires a lot of work and sweat and tears.
Which brings me to my point, Iīd rather try to preserve whatīs left of it and not just buy most of the parts as reproductions.
But thatīs just my two cent.
A (wartime) vehicle deserves to be restored accurateley, meaning save
as much as possible of the original sheetmetal. But of course, youīre right, itīs not my car and he can do whatever he wants to do with the car.
That doesnīt mean everybody has to like it.
Imagine Christian Grundmann throwing away the rotten Kdf Body and restore it with new metal all over....
Again, itīs only my opinion.
In 20 or 30 years most of the kubels around arenīt original anymore, because they were restored with too many repro parts.
Since this is a "reproriginal" it doesnīt matter anyway... |
