Jon has a 5 cyl, which uses a special bellhousing that has no starter hole. The starter fits on the engine and engages the flywheel from that side. Karl's starter setup is for wbx bellhousings.
It has been repeated many times but once again, bump starting Syncros raises the very real possibility of CRACKING the low gear housing. At least with a 5 cyl you can install your spare starter without fooling with the difflock mechanism. I always carried a spare when I took mine remote. Only needed to install it once in over 100,000 miles of 5 cyl driving. Jon has a turbo etc so maybe not so easy to swap on the road.

Yes maybe... Have you considered Karl's TDI starter with the adapter? Do you have a new ignition switch? |

Horrible news indeed.
I was wondering if all of the bump starting that you were forced to do would come back to bite and unfortunately it did. Hopefully someone is able to source a new core for you.
Peter shaw(2dokas) is selling a rough syncro doka with dual diff locks at SDM but I am not sure if he is willing to part it out. It has low gears IIRC. _________________ SyncroFest Schadenfreude!

Jon, bad news indeed, looks like we are in the same boat, my tranny took a dump, stuck in 4th, classic 3-4 slider issue, fairly fortunate as we were on blacktop in the middle of Death Valley when it occurred.
If you need to borrow a 2WD Westy for Syncrofest don't hesitate to PM me, and no..... you can't take it up the hill.

I will be at SyncroFest Today 4/19/12, along with several other Lost Burritos, and the general public.
There are 131 Van registered, plus there is a day pass that some of my friends will be using..
I hope we all have a fantastic 4/20 too
see you there _________________ Where in the world are the The Lost Burritos? |

here is why my transmission failed, it was not the bump starts, and it was not the granny syncro slider rivets coming loose
that bolt is one of 8 that hold the granny housing to the tranny case.
about a month ago, the 7 bolts that are visible around the granny housing got retightened after they came loose, and I developed a tranny fluid leak.
the retightening stopped the leak, but nobody thought about the 8th fastener that lives under the granny housing inspection cover.
I had a great time at SyncroFest, even without my Syncro.
There are 2 more Lost Burrito gatherings coming up. One to the Lost Coast May 4-6
so far attendees include syncrodoka, silent lurker, DLJ, tdwesty, Wildcat, and possibly a few others.
this will be a 4wd only trip with the goal to get through USAL road from north to south. Expect BIG Mud pits at the top.
Sometime near end of May, after SyncroSolstice, I hope to have another Big Sur gathering. Possibly on may 26, not sure yet.
This gathering will camp at Plaskett Ridge, reached from Nacimiento Fergusson Road, as the GoWesty crew will be participating, and we want a site that can hold more than the half dozen Lost Burrito regulars. _________________ Where in the world are the The Lost Burritos? |

May 26 is a Monday, any plans for a weekend stay there? 2WD friendly? If not I can always join you at the campsite, great place. Do you have reservations?
Have fun in Lost Coast, I will be heading to Yosemite that weekend with other Samba Westies _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

No. This is a free remote campout. Plaskett Ridge is not the same as Plaskett campground down on Hwy 1
Yes monday may 28 is memorial Day. Traffic may be nuts that weekend. Not sure it's a good choice for a meetup
. I invite others opinions.
The South Coast Ridge road reached from Nacimiento Fergusson is 2wd friendly. _________________ Where in the world are the The Lost Burritos? |

Well at least you know it wasn't something that you did, unfortunately you still ended up with down time. Glad you are planning ahead for another camping trip with Betty.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune Jon, did the loose bolt damage any of the internals or just the inspection cover plate? Is the whole case shot or just the cover plate?
I was told to use loctite on that bolt when I did mine to avoid what happened to you. _________________ 1987 Syncro (converted 2WD auto)

Hmmm...I don't like that! Perhaps we give them a call tomorrow at the number listed on the site and see what they have to say.

here is the updating photo of Cow Mountain Gate
http://www.blm.gov/ca/ukiah/cow_mtn_cam/
Cow Mountain is open. That means the mud is not severe enough to stop OHV use.
I called Fort Bragg dept of transportation and left a message requesting USAL Road conditions. 707-964-4652
Kings Range BLM informed me that USAL Road opened on April 15. 707-986-5400
Based on Cow Mountain being open, ,and IF USAL road is open as of April 15 as BLM Humbolt thinks, I believe USAL should be driveable.
However Kirk Meeks, DasMule, and AATransaxle Daryl tried to go through USAL Road after SyncroFest, and found the gate locked. I just got off the phone to Daryl.
Based on that on the ground report, I would say USAL is CLOSED, despite what BLM said.
I have no alternate plan, and have just heard that my Tranny is trash. Ring and Pinion and all but 1st gear are trash too.
If you guys want to do a trip next weekend, I suggest you message amongst yourselves to come up with an option.
Im going to retire and lick my wounds for a while. _________________ Where in the world are the The Lost Burritos? |

The plan so far is call this week and verify if Usal will be open or not. If it is a no go then Mendocino national forest or cow mountain are alternative options. Now is a good time to play as there is still some challenging driving available and it isn't hot yet. _________________ SyncroFest Schadenfreude!
