So i have a couple suggestions off the forum on ways to go
One was enlarge the head from 53 to 55cc and run .050" deck for a 8.5:1 with the W100.
Or swap the cam to a W110 (1500-5500rpm) or a web 163 (1300-5500rpm)
Which i could remove shims and tighten the deck for.
Bearing in mind we are running small pdsit carbs , stock oil bath and 1.3/8 exhaust with heat exchangers and the redline is going to be 4500-5000.
This is a daily driver that i want to have some torque to get it's 2200lbs moving and be able to cruise on the highway NOT a 7000rpm screamer in a 1600lb bug (i have one of those ) _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

i've been going back and forth on cam choice for the 1955 i'm about to build for my square. Web 163 has been at the top of the list most of this time. 2 others that were suggested to me were the web 86a and 86b running 1.25(both are 1.4-1.5 rocker cams) the 86b with 1.25s has pretty close to the same lift as the 163 with 1.25s. the 86b does have more duration though 300/260 vs 284/249. the 86a is in between the 2 and you may get a closer to desirable lift with 1.33s.
where i'm stuck on my deciding which is when/if i'll get more serious that stock valved fluff and buffed heads. if not then the 163 is full on my choice. if i'm gonna go with a nice set of larger valved ported and polished heads and build a bigger exhaust then maybe the 86b is more along what i want and run 1.25s with the worked stock heads and swao to 1.4-1.5 when i upgrade the heads.
i've truly been back and forth on this for a month or more...ken.... _________________ ITMC

I'd run a Web 163 on 105LC and don't look back. If you want to get Froggy run some 1.3 rockers with it too. _________________ Please do NOT send me Private Messages through the Samba PM System (I will not see them). Send me an e-mail to john at aircooled dot net

Thanks John
I wasn't sure if you were checking in here.
I am pretty sure i want to run the web 163 now from all my reading through the forums.
I am still unsure about the deck being .077" it seems big, if i drop the .010" spacer out it would be down to .067" and 8.4:1 compression.
Or am I pushing it with a heavy car and too ?
I'm guessing my ACN lifters are okay with the change to a web cam. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

i'm sure john will comfirm or correct his but i think optimal cr for that cam is 8:1 - 8.5:1 range or so. i'm a coupla weeks out from buying my cam lifter due to not getting a bonus i was expecting from work but planned to contact john about my choice of that cam with my set up...ken.... _________________ ITMC

so far the engine plan was, but now i am looking at a set of Dellorto 36 or 40's instead of the PDSIT carbs
Which way to go??? 36 or 40's and initial jetting?
30 vent
122 main
180 air
55 idle
DRD L3 heads
90.5 b piston & cyl
5.5 rods
74 stroke
Web 163 cam
1.1/2 quart CB thinline sump
stock PDSIT carbs and oil bath
OTT exhaust and heat exchangers (i drive it all year or till they start salting the roads )
8.59:1 compression _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Fired up the 1904 last night, and it's lean popping like crazy, 3 turns out on the idle screws plus another 2 or 3 while it was running and it's still popping.
I had to keep throttling it during the break in to keep the afr around 13 at 3000 rpm, if it settled at all it would pop and read 18 or so afr.
I have a set of 60 idles i can drop in and try, or I'll start drilling my 49 idles till I come up with something it likes.
it definitely sounds different than the 1600
The carbs are 36 dells from alfa 1750
30 vent
122 main
190 air
49 idle _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Since you have them, drop in the 60 idles and see what it does... _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!!

Swapped in the 60's it was rich but i figured i could get the timing checked at least and get it to idle. But then it started running rough and wouldn't respond to the throttle so i figure we fouled the plugs.
I'll pull the plugs and see where to go from there.
It was still popping through the idles on all 4 until i turned up the mixture but then it ran like a bag 'o crap. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

49 idles, sounds like alfa1750 was getting serious, I though he would have just given you 50's _________________ (06:31:07) RoachGhia: "i drink dick way too fast"

Yup the plugs were black with the 60's
back to the 49's and i reamed them till they fit the 50 on the jet gauges which seems like it was a lot. 5 turns out on the mixture screws now and it idles, still popping out the drivers side so I'm going to pull the carb and check the gasket and the plugs while i'm in there.
on a side note.... the 1/4" drive 12" wobbler extension is just the ticket to getting the nuts off the manifolds with little effort. i'll post a pic later for the T3 guys. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

took a couple videos to show what's going on.
floats are set 6mm and 12mm
fuel pressure 3-3.5 psi, stock pump
019 set at 7btdc at idle
I am getting fuel dripping from the aux venturi when it's idling, so it seems to be loading up and then popping and spitting
you can see the drip in this video
and the popping/spitting in this video, if the revs are held up for a while it will backfire out the carb and pop/spit
I'm not new to dells, we have 2 sets of 45's in the beetles, but this I haven't run in to before
HELP i want to drive this so I can seat the rings.
and it's my daily driver once it's running again _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

For the first video, you may need to lower your float setting
For the second, my 40IDF's do the same thing when the engine is not up to running temp yet, is the engine up to temp? _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

6-7mm float height and 55 idle is what I'd expect normal to be
Seat the rings first and play with the jets later |

It won't run without barking, spitting and backfiring so until i get the extra fuel to stop dribbling from the auxilary venturi i'm kind of stuck.
If i rev it after it dribbles for a while it either backfires out the exhaust or a backfire out the carb. I don't want a fire under the decklid while out driving around
I have 52 idles at this point.
So going lower than 6 mm for the floats is okay?
That is the only thing i could think of to fix the dribble
And no it wasn't warmed up yet _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

You probably checked this already but are all your air bypass screws closed off? Have you checked for vacuum leaks around the manifolds? _________________
