Hey Gordy, I think perhaps we should respect that this is Gregs thread, as implied by the edited/deleted posts in the previous page. Time for a Subaru Diesel Conversion thread methinks.......

yep^. and when stid finally does post a video i bet the engine will actually idle and will possibly be moving a vehicle. cant wait to see it. Ill be interested in the most well developed setup, whatever that ends up being, not necessarily the one thats first to market. _________________ asking the questions no one has an answer to since 4/16/10

He is selling engines and parts, nothing saying you can't buy his stuff and have small car build it for you. I don't have space to work on my van, and small car is as close as anybody. I don't see it as competition .
And besides by posting I am bumping his thread, more people will see it and check out his stuff. _________________ Tencentlife said,

Personally I think Reg would be stoked to see there is a large vendor making kits for the engines he has a line on importing. Also makes his product a more mainstream concept. _________________ Gone but not forgotten - 1991 Carat - AAZ transmogriffied to mTDi.

Was that running at ECU high idle or foot controlled idle? _________________ Gone but not forgotten - 1991 Carat - AAZ transmogriffied to mTDi.

Make no matter.
They "Vrrm'd it" as we call it when we just instaled an engine and everything is not hooked up.
This is a very basic test that says LOTS of things are working.
They are 95% done with 95% of the way to go.
BRAVO!
Yo, OP, Greg, what do you say about this after posting that your van is in the paint shop????? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Yo, Samba polizei, r39o,
The troubles are just starting for them!
The engine that smallcar uses is EURO4.
The poorly calibrated ECu that Specialist component did was on EURO 5 engine.
EURO5= different expolsion chamber, different injectors and overall engine management.
I have in my hands a different level of hardware, software engineer work and customers that result in something that is not comparable.
I'm not impressed or jealous at all as I have both calibration for Euro4 and Euro5 that has been done at a different level and has been used and abused in america and mexico for the last 8 months and 15000miles with success.
Any people that decide to go Subaru diesel the cheap way will endup with something deceiving. I offer the ECU at 3k VS 1k form the Specialist component and there is a reason... I could talk all day long about pro and cons but I don't need to.

So what kind of characteristics would the SC car engine / tune combo result in? High EGT's? less power? catastrophic failure?
BTW, that looks pretty sweet matte! _________________ Gone but not forgotten - 1991 Carat - AAZ transmogriffied to mTDi.

You have been testing a Subaru diesel installed in a Vanagon for 15,000 miles?
congratulations!
Let me be the first:
Pictures or it ain't real!
The motor has been running, driving/flying in boats, airplanes and has been transplanted into another vehicle, I have personally driven one at a track in New England.....not a Vanagon and especially not a Syncro Vanagon
When pictures and videos of this motor running and being dyno tested in a Vanagon are released, people will believe and possibly purchase the motors and parts associated.
Greg is 100% correct as per the differing engine layouts and has shown which aftermarket ECU will properly run the motor and offer tunability.
Making it run is only one aspect of the conversion as stated numerous time throughout this thread.
I look forward to seeing more than the engine hung and hotwired startups.
I don't care who does it first.
I care who does it best

Is it just me, or is this the longest, most boring infomercial ever conceived?
I'm not interested in a swap for my van so I ignore much of the engine discussion. I do however love reading the (albiet infrequent) posts showing what other mods/paint/etc Greg has been doing to his van.
If there was anything wrong with "boring" posts on this site I bet the mods would have nuked the "have you seen one lately" and "vanagons in the wilderness" threads pages ago. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic

Sadly, "boring" is one of those "eye of the beholder" things and not against the rules.
What should be against the rules are claims with out proof. Such as pictures or videos.....

What does the driver's side filler opening go to again? Is it a water tank or a 2nd fuel tank?

Eric
I know it was discussed somewhere in this thread. It might even be an access for refilling propane. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic
