Bob says he knows the early cars came with the seat side spear trim, but doesn't know if they all did. We'll have to let the T34 Gurus chime in with the answer to that question.

Good Day All!
Bob's "aircooled.net" bearings and other tidbits he ordered arrived via UPS today! He called to check the progress of the crankshaft shortly there after, and it was ready for pick up! Machinist said it was straight, and a little bit worn, but still within standard specs. (ie: has not been turned.) It polished up nicely! 
So he ran over and picked it up before a quickie customer job arrived.
After that job was done, he started dressing out the crank.
Progress thus far:
Stayed tuned tomorrow...

You know, Tram and I had talked about doing that. But I just can't seem to tear it out of the Notch, and drop it in the t-34. For 1 thing, it's set up for 12 volt (has a 12 volt flywheel), which means I'd have to grind the trans axle out to fit it. Ten years ago (hell, even 7 years ago) I would have done that without thinking about it, but not now (well maybe, IF I still have an issue). But I got to thinking about the Notch yesterday, and what it would need to go to the Invasion (it's the back up car). The list is pretty short. It needs;
left front tire valve stem replaced (has a slow leak)
oil change, and tune up day work (like greasing the front beam, check the carb snych, check the valve lash, stuff like that)
wash and vacuum (really needs a bath)
the rims polished up
and driven.
This is why I'm more inclined to just leave it alone, and work on getting the OE engine back in the 64. IF I still have an issue, then I'll do a top end rebuild on the old 65 engine and toss it in. But, I'm thinking I shouldn't have an issue though.
As Sue showed last night, the bearings came in, and the crank got polished (thursday afternoon), and is now ready to go back in. I've already assembled that part of it. But, I'm going to check the end play before it goes in though. Then everything will be set for reassembly today. Everything else has been cleaned up (except my rebuilding table), so it should go back together without too much trouble. And it's a nice rainy day, so that would be a good day to spend indoors.

Yes, they all did. The '62s were the only ones that were different from the rest, in that the seat back release knobs were located near the top of the spears.

Sorry, took me Far longer than expected to upload pics tonite. You guys musta' been busy!

First thing Bob did yesterday-now was to check the end play on the crank. He said it was between .004th. and .005th.- closer to .005th., well within the specified .004-.006th allowed.

Yeah, that was a long 10 hour day out in the shop. I Think it took just under 9 hours to fully reassemble the engine. Good thing I did the crank assembly the night before. Everything went together very smoothly, and nothing popped up as unexpected. It has been over a year since I put 1 together though, so I don't think I did too bad.
What surprised me the most, was that it almost fired right off immediately(if the carb bowls had more fuel in them, it would have stayed running on 1st tick over), with just barely any gas left in the carb bowls (from a week ago). I've still got some fine tuning to do, but since it was getting late (and I was getting hungry), I decided to call it a day, after I cleaned up my tools and work area.
It still needs the timing set, and I want to check the carb snych, just to be sure we're good to go, but they both seemed fine last night. In fact I was looking for a different carb barrel screw, when I came across a hose clamp that I needed for the replacement oil fill tube bellows. It's got a new style WCM 1 on it, and it's thinner, so the OE clamp was too big. I changed it out, as the old one was very stiff, and cracked (they just don't make rubber stuff like they 48 years ago ), and I was trying for an oil leak free engine (Russ always told us VWs shouldn't leak oil, and that old boot would leak when oil was put in it). This was also about the same time Sue had gone back in to try and load pics.  I told her I needed a clamp for the boot, so I could add oil, then I'd be able to fire it off, but at the time I couldn't find a clamp. So I went looking for something else, and it appeared (Murphy at his best). Put the oil in, hooked up the battery, and gave the key a twist, and it almost lit right off immediately. Surprised at that, I gave the key a couple more twists (trying to build oil pressure, and fill the carb bowls, when it finally got to the point where both were good (both lights out) and it stayed running. Got out, and hooked a couple of small bungee cords to keep the rpms up, and let it run. Sounded great (no excessive knocking or loose valve noises), no drips (other than excess aviation glue dripping), no fuel leaks (other than the carbs themselves ), so we were good for a 20 minute run in. After that, I let it idle (I might need to bring it up a little, as it sounded like it was at 650 to 700 rpms), then shut it off, waited a few minutes, then hit the key again, and it lit off right away again. So we're close on the timing, and it seems ok for being warmed up. I like it when you don't have to crank the engine for long periods just to get it to start. That's all for last night.
