I'm curious to see some pics of Bugs that have been spray painted. Include what type of paint and primer you used and how it's holding up.

Did dash and doors with rattle can from walmart. It's called sea blue. It's holding up good, I removed all switches and guages. Old color was brown.

Made a temporary fix and matched the dash colour with the cars exteriour colour using 1K-acrylic rattle can primer & paint.

Nobody has yet noticed me faking the funk, so i would say the finish looks very close or almost as good as with 2K paints.

You would think the area around glovebox will be the first to suffer, but after one summer of very mild use, I've yet to have any issues with the paint. Ofcourse i know to be careful with it, so that explains some of it holding up so well.

Krylon Jade satin. Some of it is 3 years old, some is less as I've replaced panels and done some body work.
It's fading pretty bad by now but my car is so pieced together that I just wanted it all one color as I drove it and slowly fixed it.

I painted most of mine with NAPA store paint.. Its real automotive paint that they put in a spray can for you. After a wet sanding and a buffing it looks pretty slick!!

Nice!^^^

Cheapo Walmart ColorPlace Flat black!
http://www.walmart.com/ip/ColorPlace-Flat-Spray-Paint-Black/17011151

I did a quick, two day driveway paint jobby... just me and my Can-Gun.
Removed fenders/hood/decklid and sanded and painted all separate.
Removed all undercoating from fenderwells and painted with ColorPlace flat red primer, along with the insides of the fenders for aesthetics.

I fully understand the reasons for considering doing this, (did it myself many years ago) but there are a few things you may want to consider.

Rattle can paint just won't hold up no matter which paint you use. Some lasts longer then others. Some last about 2 weeks, others a little longer. If you keep it waxed and parked inside, you can extend the life of the paint.

But by the time you buy all the rattle cans you need, you have spent a pretty good chunk of change on paint. And that money could have been much better spent buying a couple quarts of GOOD paint!

The prep work is going to be the same. The cost of sanding it is going to be the same.

So in the long run, a few of these rattle can jobs actually end up costing MORE then a decent paint job.

Maaco will paint the car for about $250. And that will last far longer then your rattle can paint.

Or, you can buy a cheap spray gun from the Harbor (about $15) and use a small compressor (they have a 3 gallon pancake on sale now for $50) and if you aren't rushing, you can do a prettyy decent job that will last a lot longer then a rattle can job.

One big problem with the rattle cans, is sooner or latter you may decide to do a nicer paint job. And when that happens, you have to take all that rattle can paint off!

So you may just be making a lot of extra work for yourself and spending more money at the same time.

Mine looked good for about 3 weeks. After that the paint died and it looked like primer - which wasn't a cool accepted look at the time.

I painted some areas of my63 with with a rattle can. The hood, deck lid and bonnet I had done by a body shop when I first purchased it in 2006, because of some rust issue. You can see those pictures by clicking on the link below. That body shop has all the paint numbers on file and will make me a rattle can when ever I need it . Below are a couple of pictures of some work i did with my son last month. I'm getting ready to put in a new headliner and wanted to get some of the work done around the window. I got the drivers backside window out and did a little rattle can magic. Sanded, primed, wet sanded, painted and wet sanded it again. Now I’m just waiting to buff it out. I know it’s not perfect but it’s good enough for me. It’s my ride, not a show car, some day I'll get that new paint job when I have a garage to keep it in, now it sits outside 365 days a year. The fist picture is of the drive's door which I rattle caned (just around the window) in 2010, when I put in the new rubber in the window, seems to be holding up ok.

My original plan was to sand and prime and paint using rustoleum spray cans. I figured I'd need a case of paint. I went to Napa and they convinced me to buy their two-stage paint. It was the same price as a case of rustoleum. When painting I discovered how tough the Napa paint was; I kept getting runs and fisheyes. Every time I got them I'd have to sand everything smooth and try painting again. That's when I discovered how tough the Napa paint is. Then I checked the body shop in town and he said if I brought my paint he would spray the bug for $100. Three years later it still looks like new. Including wasted paint I spent around $300 for sanding pads, primer, paint and a professional spray. I'd planned to stick with the old paint inside the doors and dash but he went ahead and roughened the oil paint and covered it with new. That was clever because I've had more than a dozen people ask where I had the painting done.

I painted most of my '66 with Krylon Almond Beige. I used that red-brown Krylon primer for a base. I put on probably 25-30 color cans total and less than 10 primer cans. I sanded everything with 400 grit and scuffed the tight areas with a red Scoth-Brite pad. It's been on there for around a year though most of that time was in the garage during the overhaul.

I agree if your car's bodywork is done and it's ready for real paint, you're better off just buying some real auto paint and spraying it.
In my case, I just wanted my pieced together, mismatched car (body was red, fenders were maroon, hood was orange, one door was white, one was black, decklid was black) to be one color while I continued to drive it while I fixed it.

Rear fenders and decklid done with duplicolor primer and then duplicolor "Detroit diesel alpine green" engine enamel. It did eventually fade a little which was great because now it matches the rest of the body perfectly.
