I have a 1973 that has sat in my garage for a year plus and was not run until today. My problem is a intermittent miss or back-fire when it's running. It has fresh gas in a new gas tank, a new electric fuel pump mounted on the front portion of the frame under the gas tank. New fuel lines (I had a rust issue before replaced the tank), new plugs, wires, rotor, cap and a new Pertronix system. I have had the carburetor off to clean out the rust and gunk too many times. We can get the motor to start up by hand choking the carb. it will run but must be run at a high RPM to stay running. I have pulled the dist. and reinstalled, pulled the number 1 plug, brought the piston up to the top (TDC) and checked the position or the rotor, to make sure that it was pointing to number 1. The pertronix ignition was supposed to come with a .030 PLASTIC gauge, no such luck I had to find a piece of slick hard paper and fold it until I got .028 space, is this that critical. What else can you think of that I should check?

This may sound obvious -
but check to be sure that you have each plug wire - to its proper plug. |

check spark plug gap, dwell and timing. if vacuum advance distributor, be sure vac chamber and related mechanism are properly working. also look for loose/cracked/damaged vac line to carb. check valve adjustment as well. hope this info helps. _________________ [insert various aircooled vehicles here] if the women dont find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.- Red Green |

u can try adjusting the carb as well. (if i can remember correctly) if it is back fireing out the exhaust it is lean. if it is poping out the carb it is rich. _________________ 71 ghia coupe

Thank you all for your comments, I will look into them. Because the carb was full of rust, I had it apart many times trying to figure out why I was not getting fuel, the end result is I'm not sure if I got everything correct on the carb. We can start the motor by hand choking the carb and keeping the engine revved at a high idle, then it dies. I have thought about buying a new solex 34 pict, boy have they gone up, what's the warning about not using a 009 dist with this carb. The car came with this dist and carb from the factory, why the big change of heart about the 009? Are the new repo carbs being built different?
All of my misery started when my gas tank rusted up, unfortunately it took me too long to find the culprit. I changed the fuel pump,(went through two of them) before I figured out about the shaft length differences. Rebuilt the carb taking great care to clean out all of the rust, that's when I found the rusty tank. Installed a electric fuel pump in the back, no luck, then one night when I was trying to figure out why it wasn't getting fuel, the short hose from the rear frame to the metallic fuel line came off in my hand, both ends were hard cracked oversized sucking air. Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy. |

| A lot of evidence points to the carb passages/jets. If it was really stopped up with crud, it may be hard to clean. Some time in a bucket of carb cleaner might do it, but I would be temped to replace it. Old evaporating gas leaves a varnish like substance in secret places. |

| or have someone who is really good at carb rebuilding do it. There are plenty here on thesamba. They may find something you missed. 009's dont go well with carbs that need the vac advance. |

| If the 009 dist. is not a good match for the 34 PICT-3 carb, then what is? Do I go with a mechanical/vacuum type, and if I have to change dist. what year should I go to. I found that I have a 34 PICT-3 German carb in my box of tricks, I may just have this carb rebuilt. The one I'm running now is a BOCAR. |

An 009 and 34Pict carb is not going to cause problems starting or at idle.
The "problem" with the combo is drivability related and can be worked out in most cases. |

I haven't purchased anything from Tim, but he did patiently help me on a very long phone call recently. You should definitely talk to him about your problem. _________________ Use "to" for "give the wrench to me."
