I will be using an ATV jack with a 14 x 14 inch and 3-4 inch thick board on top. I don't want to damage the case so is there any ideo where exactly I can safely resst the case when I lower it? _________________ -1973 Volkswagen Bus Westy (Weekender)

Yes, I seen those dollys. However I will only be lowering it as I would like to successfully put the gas tank back in wihtout bending anythign out of shape.that is all. So i was inquiring to see as to if it would be ok to just lower it in the board going across the top bars of the atv jack _________________ -1973 Volkswagen Bus Westy (Weekender)

you can leave it on the atv jack if you want. Here are examples of how our engine was stored when off the bus.

That sure is purdy there Steve!
To the OP, I just put a 2' section of 2x10 (or whatever is handy) on top of the jack and let the engine sit on that. _________________ DJ

You can perch it on trash cans too. It is only 268 lbs or thereabouts
Colin
There are four "pads" cast in the fins on the crankcase, any board that spans all four, and you are good to go.

Did you have any luck lowering your engine? I am trying to get my firewall back in after replacing the vapor lines and not having any luck so far, super tight fit. Wondering how easy it is to lower the engine say 2" just to get the firewall back in... _________________ 1978 Kombi

You should be able to do this. There are two bolts that hold the transmission bell housing to the ceiling that will need to come out and then the rear hangar on the engine. You should be able to remove the bolts that attach the hanger to the frame of the bus. Once that's done I think you should be able to lower the engine and transmission a bit. Be careful not to go too far. I doubt you'd even need to disconnect any wires or the throttle cable. _________________ Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic

Yes, this is exactly what I was gonna do. Just take off the rear hanger bar and the top two bolts above the bell housing, just to lower it a few inches _________________ -1973 Volkswagen Bus Westy (Weekender)

I don't think you need to remove the bar. Just unbolt the ends from the frame of the bus. Leave the hanger in place and the engine should lower straight down. _________________ Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic

I'm not sure. Just take them all out. _________________ Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic

Ok, but I can leave the bar atached to the motor right?
How the heck can you reach up there to take the bolts out from the bell housing _________________ -1973 Volkswagen Bus Westy (Weekender)

Yeah, leave the bar on the engine. To get to the upper bell housing bolts you'll need to probably use a 3/8 air ratchet and about a 6 inch extension coming up and over the transmission from the drivers side. It helps to have long arms and you just about have to hug the transmission to reach the passeneger side bolt but you can do it. Be sure to support the engine from below with a floor jack while doing this. _________________ Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic

Not at all necessary and it would only get in the way. Remove the two bolts over the transmission first, THEN the hanger bar. The engine will hang there all day long without the two bolts over the tranny installed. Raise it a little bit with the floor jack and then pull the 4 bolts out of the hanger bar and lower it down. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Don't even need long arms. I'm pretty short, and don't have any trouble getting those bolts above the transmission
I don't usually see them, but once I get the socket on them they aren't so bad. Fine pitch on those bolts, so LOTS of turning to get them all the way out (and back in).
Enjoy!
P.S. Don't drop the engine more than a few inches unless you disconnect the shift rod and front trans connection. Dropping the engine a lot would put too much stress on the nose cone. _________________ DJ

I believe i only need an inch or two to get the tank over the metal tin that borders the firewall _________________ -1973 Volkswagen Bus Westy (Weekender)

if anyone is thinking about changing a type 1 with one of theese jacks I highly recommend it . Recently two OLD guys got together in Phoenix and used one of theese to pull a bug engine out to replace a bad transmission. We were both surprised at how well it worked. The spacing between the two black rubber pads allowed just enough room for the taco plate and the engine rested on the pads...p.s. the lock mechanism on the jack gets in the way ...tie it off before you start _________________ 69 tintop camper 1600 DP |
