Took all the pistons and cylinders to the shop, cleaned them prior to bead blasting..pistons are nice,no scuffing. The cylinders are glazed but no ridges, will shoot some pics when I bead blast. The heads are half done, still need to detail clean and lap in the valves..the rest is ready to go though...

Passed on the '68 bus,it was very close to being bought for flippage but I didnt want to deal with something that hadnt ran in 28 years...too many surprises..Bob the butcher will probably grab it and sawzall it in his little chamber of horrors, the souls of many baywindow busses howl at night in his back yard, bus blood everywhere. The '58 DD panel was a slight possibility but it turned out to be way too rusty to deal with..

But hey,I found another slut..

1970 VW Transporter. Bad motor but I have a lot of money invested in brand new parts including: new 31 pict carb, Bosch alternator, tires, 2 new dual port heads, master cylinder. also included is another freshly rebuilt 31 pict, 34 pict 4, a box of stock air cleaners and too many other part to list. this car was a work car so its a bit scratched but a solid investment if you want a pre-smog car with a whole bunch of new parts.----

the guys desperate, the price has been dropping weekly its definately in bottom feeder territory now..the heads and the alternator are worth damn near half of what im gonna offer...called him last night, said I'll call friday and see it saturday if he still has it,creeping in lowball slow..looks like I'll be painting this shit barge if i get it,thinking sealing wax red...the perfect lipstick on a pig color..

Finally got back on the engine..passed on that last bus,way too much work to do what I want to do.Believe me its tough to pass on buying a Vw,but your project eyes are always bigger than your project stomach and I dont plan on falling in love.
Been busy on other stuff anyway, the old Vw hoarder in the hills called me,he's moving..so I went and scored a bunch more stuff to sell (check my ads,I dare ya) lots of good early parts, sold a bunch already...oval seats and dashboard, early screw terminal horns and thin slot 6v generators..not many late model parts.. I'll take the early stuff if I have too.. Very Happy ..

installed the oil pump, screen and sump plate..set end play to .004,gave the flywheel a spin by hand and its like a roulette wheel..it keeps on spinning...thats with the cam, distributor and oil pump installed...it oughta run smooth and cool with that little resistance.

Finished the second head tonight as well..lapping valves reveal how nice these heads are,the shiny area on the valve is the seat area, its nice and broad, positione close to the stem side, which means lots of valve and seat life left.On the lowball build side I didnt throughly clean the deposits off the valve stems and eyeballed the valve springs...they are all the same height so in they went...on to the rods...I lost two with the engine but I have a few spares...

Theres stuff in Indiana,ya just have to hustle...get to know local folks, scan craigslist..I found a trove of early parts looking at craigslist ads for cars...the dudes pictures showed the car for sale and the yard of a true hoarder so I called him about the car and when i got to his place I didnt buy it...but ended up going back there three times to pick early Vw parts..got the baja for 100 bucks cause my neighbor knew I was into Vw's and told me about it..any autoshow/swap meet, not just Vw is a good spot too, often when you find parts they are underpriced...my partner scored a fresh pair of Baby Dell's (dellorto 34FRD's) with CB linkage, all like new for a 100 bucks...and just flipped them on the classifieds here for 300...

Got a handshake deal on the baja with an 82nd airborne vet...Vietnam era...great guy,he's a car builder as well, the baja will spend its time around Quartzite AZ,he bought a motorhome and with the baja he will snowbird it...so I ended up with the engine and 250 cash on the flip.Finished the 40 dollar longblock as well..

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The vet saw the engine in the stand and looked at my garage some..he wants me to build the engine for his baja so we'll see where it goes, that baja has done me well.

the best advice ever.
at first i thought you over the top with some of your caviler comments.
that;s good enough , run thinker oil. etc.. (yes, what's to loose)

my local guy , Lee ,, vw retired, mech, says.

I know what he means.

yes, and Craigs list you can beg too. post WTB, i do very well there.
and "all of craigs." link. for country wide searches.

ive done 4 cars in 2 years. i dont think, im near to you, and I'm fully retired.

we have 2 vw only yards here, owned by same guy.
he travels the vw shows and can get anything i want. I ask and bingo
(2 thermostats in a blink of eye, 1 example)

This is where the zen part comes in...take it as it comes, dont force it.The car has a way of finding its groove, let it find it and relax.

My friend Marini, an old VW dealer wrench used to work all day at the dealership then came home and built engines... He had a portalign tool,he would hand linebore and assemble engines to sell on the side blending used parts and new and selling them for 150 bucks a pop...big money at the time. He always said "dont worry about it they are nothing but cheap german junk, just put it together and let it go."

Update...sold the longblock for 550 bucks and a set of brand new 87mm pistons and cylinders, sold the baja roller with towbar for 400...and a bunch of stuff at Bugorama so right now Im cash heavy but still have a complete engine and picked up a nice case to seed the engine rebuild business.
Figure the next move is a test stand and assemble a complete 1641 out of what I got to sell... and possibly a 1904 (90.5 X 76) single port longblock for the '67 with some other parts I have..90 horsepower mileage/stump puller...it would double as a potential bus engine as well...This is the fun part of the Vw game, it pays for itself..

It's times like this where I wish the site had a "like" button..That's some funny shit..And even funnier to know there are actually some people that would feel that way if they came across a GEX block and Empi chrome. Laughing
