...but wouldn't start after lunch. I pulled the starter out and collected all these parts. I don't recognize the small dowel or spring. Were they parts from the starter? The starter is only 3 years old. Using jumper cables it still spins and the solenoid jumps. Any idea whether this is repairable or do I need another starter? It's a 12v starter from my '67 bug.
Thanks,
crvc

Looks like the bearing on the starter shaft belched its' guts out! You will probably have to buy another starter _________________ Longrifle

yes.
If you bought it from a local autozone, Orieley's etc, it's probably rebuilt and not new, and probably still under lifetime (LOL) warrenty. |

Just for future reference its not good to spin these starters up outside of the transmission. Without the bushing that is located in the transmission the armature is free to move around and may damage the field coils. _________________ Athens Euroworks

Thanks for the replies. The nearest shop that stocks bug parts is a 3-hour drive. I called and his starter costs about $150. I called Napa who didn't have one and didn't even have a number for ordering one. CIP1 has them for around $100 plus shipping. Then I called every auto parts store that is within and hour's drive. All 5 of them. The last place had a starter for $40. I had to work but my wife was able to go get it. She was happy that for once one of my bug parts was less than $100.
The $40 included a lifetime warranty. The only thing that bothers me is I had to give them the broken starter. I would have liked to keep at least the solenoid since generally that's what breaks. But with a lifetime warranty I guess I can live with it.

I went through three of those China "rebuilt" starters in a row before I sprang for a genuine Bosch unit from the local VW shop. It was expensive, but it works every time, and sounds nice and smooth. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

We used to have an old guy around the shop and one of his favorite sayings was "You know what rebuilt means? USED!"

I won't lose it; It's duct-taped to the wall in my office.

Advance Auto sells new Bosch ones but they are expensive and will have to be special ordered. _________________ 1967 VW Beetle

I might be mistaken, but it looks like a disintegrated starter drive;should be able to just put in a new drive?I think the rest of the starter is okay. _________________ '64 ghia coupe...gettin' there slowly |

Yup, it's in and running. It's a lot beefier than the old one. I guess for that reason the bug starts instantly now. With the old one it took a while to start and I was constantly fiddling with the choke and three adjustment screws on the carb. The new one came with a spare bushing that I didn't use. If it breaks I've got that lifetime guarantee and I'll be sure to pull the engine so I can change out that bushing. I know you guys have ways to do it with the engine still in but every time I pull the engine something else breaks so I'm in no rush to do it.

| I can vouch for the genuine Bosch starters. I put one in my '61 Bug about 20 years ago. I admit I don't drive my Bug very much, but that starter has never let me down. Well worth the money. |

If the starter breaks on you be sure not to tell the store that when you take it back, in most cases not replacing the bushing voids the warranty. |

So is there a simple way to replace the bushing without pulling the engine out?

No.
Or get an autostick starter. They don't need the bushing. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.
